A delightful story built around a fairy who was banished from FairyLand for life for marrying a mortal: Gilbert’s incisive witty political satire is as relevant today as it was when it was first performed in 1882, and many consider the music among the best of Sullivan’s work.
In this ‘fairy opera’ the House of Lords is lampooned as a bastion of ineffective, privileged dimwits! The political party system and other institutions also come in for a dose of satire.
