Final Performance of Critically Acclaimed Queer Cabaret Comes to Newcastle Fringe
You Can’t Take Me Home Toni, a one-of-a-kind autobiographical theatre-cabaret by artist Lorraine Smith, is set to take its final bow at the 2025 Newcastle Fringe Festival. This unique and unflinching show fuses outrageous comedy, 80s nostalgia, and hard-hitting personal stories in a dynamic blend of theatre, dance, and visual storytelling.
Catch it one last time on Saturday 26 July at 8:30pm at Dance City—a not-to-be-missed date for fans of bold, genre-bending performance.
Set in the summer of 1989, the show follows young Lorraine as she becomes entranced by the pulsing pop of Toni Basil’s Word of Mouth on VHS. What begins as a childhood fascination evolves into a powerful and hilarious journey through sexual awakening, queer identity, trauma, and self-acceptance.
Audiences can expect Dada-inspired costumes by award-winning Dutch designer Daphne Karstens, choreographed dance, projected visuals, lip syncs, and deeply personal storytelling. With themes ranging from sexual assault and harassment to body image, shame, and joy, Smith’s fearless performance has garnered praise across Europe.
The show carries an age recommendation of 16+ due to adult content and explicit themes, and it's already earned a cult following across festivals including Stockholm Fringe, Durham Fringe, and Amsterdam’s Queering Puppets.
Whether you're drawn by the promise of outrageous humour, emotive storytelling, or simply want to witness the last ever performance of this unforgettable show, You Can’t Take Me Home Toni is a bold celebration of queer experience and creative resilience.
