When Blaydon actors Jonathan and Helen Cash were looking for the right play to perform and produce they looked no further than their next door neighbour, the North Eastern playwright and poet, Tom Kelly.

Tom Kelly
Tom Kelly is well-known throughout the region for his plays and musicals, including Tom and Catherine, the musical about Tom and Catherine Cookson. His work is often featured at the Customs House in South Shields, where his most recent, Geordie The Musical, played to rapturous houses, justly earning a standing ovation every night.  His one-man play, I Left My Heart In Roker Park also recently played to packed houses, winning a WOW award, and became a finalist in the Journal Culture Awards.

Tom’s play, Baby Love, is a two-hander, featuring iconic 60s pop songs and is about a couple who play the working men’s clubs whilst their relationship is under strain from the female partner’s increasingly urgent need for a child.

Jonathan and Helen Cash
The similarity between the onstage and offstage characters only runs so deep, as Helen and Jonathan are happily married and have a two-year old son, Alexander, whose picture figures on the publicity material for the play.

Jonathan, who also directs the play says,   “The script is a joy to perform and the characters have just emerged naturally.  And how many people in our position could have such incredible good fortune as to have the perfect playwright living right next door?”

Baby Love opens on 21 April at 7.30 at the Arts Centre, Washington;
transfers to the Gala Theatre Studio in Durham from 22 to 25 April at 8.00.
The run ends at the Customs House Studio in South Shields on 3 May at 7.30 and on 4 May at 2.30 and 7.30.
