The PLAYHOUSE Whitley Bay is thrilled to be hosting Sing-a-long-a Frozen; coming to us for two showings on Sunday 26^th July, this year.

Sing-a-long-a Productions bring a unique, interactive screening of the worldwide Disney phenomenon Frozen, as part of a nationwide tour.

A must see, the screening will have lyrics on screen to help you sing along with Elsa and Anna!

The evening is introduced by a live host who will show you how to use your interactive prop bag and then just sit back and 'Let it Go'! YOU the audience can be the stars! Don’t forget to dress up as your favourite character; be a Snow Queen for the day or Olaf the snowman, the coolest iceman ever!

Having taken the world by “snowstorm”, Frozen has become the biggest animated film in the world and fifth biggest film of all time. In this heart-warming tale, fearless optimist Anna sets off on an epic journey, teaming up with rugged mountain man Kristoff and his loyal reindeer Sven, to find her sister Elsa whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom of Arendelle in an eternal winter. Encountering Everest-like conditions, mystical trolls and a hilarious snowman named Olaf, Anna and Kristoff battle the elements in a race to save the kingdom.

The Academy Award winning song “Let it Go”, sang by actress Idina Menzel, sold over 10.9 million copies in 2014 alone. It will feature as part of Sing-a-long-a-Frozen, along with the rest of the platinum certified soundtrack making this sing-a-long one not to be missed.

Disney and Cameron Mackintosh are delighted to announce that their multi award-winning musical Mary Poppins is coming to Newcastle Theatre Royal from Thursday 8 September – Saturday 29 October 2016 as part of a tour of the UK and Ireland.

Following his recent successes with Barnum and Oliver! at the Newcastle Theatre Royal, Cameron Mackintosh is returning with yet another favourite in Mary Poppins. He said: “It’s hard to believe that it is already 11 years since Mary Poppins first landed on the London stage.  My goodness……time flies even faster than our beloved Nanny!  I’m delighted to bring this wonderful musical to Newcastle after spreading its magic around the world.  Since we originally staged the production we have found even more magical ways to stage this timeless tale and I’m sure you will find our new Mary practically perfect in every way”.

The magical story of the world’s favourite Nanny arriving on Cherry Tree Lane has been triumphantly and spectacularly brought to the stage with dazzling choreography, incredible effects and unforgettable songs. The stage version of Mary Poppins is brilliantly adapted from the wonderful stories by PL Travers and the beloved Walt Disney film.

The stage production of Mary Poppins is co-created by Cameron Mackintosh and has a book by Oscar-winning screenwriter and Downton Abbey creator, Julian Fellowes. It has a timeless score by Richard M Sherman and Robert B Sherman including the songs Jolly Holiday, Step in Time, Supercalifragilisticexpialidociousand Feed the Birds with new songs and additional music and lyrics by the Olivier award-winning British team of George Stiles and Anthony Drewe. The producer for Disney Theatrical Productions is Thomas Schumacher.

The internationally renowned and multi award-winning creative team assembled for Mary Poppins is led by stage and film director Richard Eyre. Co-direction and choreography is by Matthew Bourne, with co-choreography by Stephen Mear. Set and costume design is by Bob Crowley with lighting design by Natasha Katz, sound design by Paul Groothuis and orchestrations by William David Brohn. The National Tour of Mary Poppins is directed by Anthony Lyn and choreographed by Geoffrey Garratt with musical supervision by Stephen Brooker.

The stage production of Mary Poppins originally opened in 2004 and ran in the West End for three years and over 1,250 performances. During this time it won the Olivier Award for Best Theatre Choreography and Best Set Design as well as the Evening Standard Award for Best Set Design and the Variety Club Award for Best Musical. The Broadway production ran for over six years where it won the Tony Award for Best Set Design. The show has subsequently toured Australia, New Zealand, the U.S, the UK, has been seen by over 11 million people and is currently breaking box office records in Vienna.

FIlm Review: Big Hero 6

In a week in which most cinemas are full of 50 Shades, it was great to see our local community cinema in Hexham showing a family film.

Disney have produced a half term treat that is poles apart from the princess-fesr that was Frozen. In fact this song has no big soundtrack hits – so there will be no sing-a-long-a-big hero 6. No, this is a film that shows it is canny to be into science and technology – the geeks will inherit the Earth, as it were.

Hiro is our young hero, and he loves his tech. After building robots to battle with, he wants to follow in his older brother’s footsteps and develop robots and other technology. He comes up with microbots as a showpiece in order to win a place at the school’s robotics program. Hiro is successful in getting the place but disaster strikes as a fire breaks out, killing his brother. He is left with his brother’s project – an inflatable nursing robot called Baymax, and a group of his brother’s friendly former colleagues. Hiro needs to get the bottom of why there was a fire and so the adventures unfold.

The bright animation is excellent and the detail of the background often separates this from some recent lesser films. The back alleys felt grimy and the city high rised. The pace of the story bounced along at fair old lick which helped maintain the attention of the younger members of the audience. The film is charming without being patronising, colourful without being sickly. There is also a short at the start of the film about man’s best friend which is well worth arriving on time for and a great little sequence after the titles finish.

A cracking family film for half term.

A new interactive screening of the Disney phenomenon Frozen is set to bring a lot of sparkle to Newcastle when it arrives at the Theatre Royal on 1 March next year.  

Sing-a-long-a Frozen is the new show from Singalonga Productions who have previously had huge hits at the Theatre Royal with Sing-a-long-a Sound of Music and Sing-a-long-a ABBA.

The show features a special screening of Disney’s Frozen with lyrics to help the audience sing along with the characters, together with a live host and individual pack of props so that each person can interact with the movie. In the established Sing-a-long-a tradition, there is a fancy dress competition as many audience members will typically dress up as their favourite character.

The show has been selling out in venues across the country and a rush is expected for tickets in Newcastle.

The unique, interactive entertainment form known as Sing-a-long-a was allegedly born in an old people’s home in Inverness. The nurses wanted to involve the residents in an interactive group therapy. They therefore wanted to screen Seven Brides For Seven Brothers and gave out song sheets so that everyone could sing-a-long.

Sing-a-long-a Sound of Music opened at the Prince Charles Cinema in August of 1999. After an initial eight-show run soon sold out, while attracting huge media attention, and regular shows has been running ever since not only in London but all around the world.

Other films to be developed in the same way by Singalonga Productions have included Grease, Dirty Dancing and Moulin Rouge.

Disney’s Frozen is the latest classic film to be added to the Sing-a-long-a list of shows.

Disney’s legendary musical The Lion King will begin performances tonight (Thursday 18th September) at Sunderland Empire, in advance of its official opening on Tuesday 23rd September. Julie Taymor’s internationally acclaimed production will play a 7-week season in the city as part of its sell-out tour of the UK and Ireland which has broken records in every city it has visited.

Excitement has been building across the region since the season was announced in January this year. Large crowds queued to be the very first to purchase tickets, and ticket sales have broken all records at the theatre. However, many good seats are still available.

A fleet of 23 trucks will transport Disney's enormous production to Sunderland, making it the largest theatre production ever to perform at the legendary Empire Theatre. The show includes hundreds of masks, puppets and more than 700 elaborate costumes representing 26 different types of animal, which combine with a complex set and state-of-the-art digital lighting technology to bring this production to life.

The production also brings an international cast of 52 performers from 18 different countries. The company is led by 11 principals; Thulisile Thusi as Rafiki, Cleveland Cathnott as Mufasa, Meilyr Sion as Zazu, Christopher Colquhoun as Scar, Tarisha Rommick as Shenzi, Daniel Norford as Banzai, Philip Oakland as Ed, Dominic Brewer as Timon, Lee Ormsby as Pumbaa, Hope Maine as Simba and Melina M Poy as Nala.

Disney’s The Lion King is based on the beloved Academy Award-winning animated film which was entrusted to Director and Co-Designer Julie Taymor to adapt the film for the stage. Taymor brought a vast array of disciplines to The Lion King which draws upon her immeasurable experience of various theatrical styles and cultures to tell the compelling tale of Simba, the young lion cub, as he journeys through life and struggles to accept the responsibilities of adulthood and his destined role of King.

The acclaimed stage adaptation of Disney’s 1994 animated film was first seen on Broadway in 1997, where it celebrates its 17th anniversary later this year. The production has now been seen by over 75 million people across five continents and the acclaimed West End production continues to sell out at London’s Lyceum Theatre, where it has welcomed its 12 millionth guest whilst celebrating its 15th anniversary.
