Sisterhood and Storytelling: Little Women Brings Heart and Heritage to Darlington

Little Women

Darlington Hippodrome

Tuesday 30 September - Saturday 4 October, 2025.

Few novels have captured the imagination for as long as Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women. Generations have grown up with Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy March — four sisters navigating love, ambition, and loss against the backdrop of the American Civil War. Now, Anne-Marie Casey’s new stage adaptation is set to bring the March family to life on the Darlington Hippodrome stage as part of a major UK tour.

A Timeless Tale Reimagined

Though written more than 150 years ago, Little Women continues to resonate with modern audiences. Casey’s adaptation draws out the wit and warmth of Alcott’s original while celebrating its enduring themes of sisterhood, courage and self-discovery.

“The March sisters remind us that women can be bold, persistent, self-assured, and the heroes of their own story,” explains the creative team behind the production. It’s a message that feels particularly relevant today, echoing the renewed enthusiasm for the novel following Greta Gerwig’s acclaimed film adaptation.

A Cast of Familiar Faces

This new production brings together a cast brimming with stage and screen experience. Belinda Lang, well-known for her television work and extensive theatre career, plays the formidable Aunt March. Juliet Aubrey, who first came to prominence in the BBC’s Middlemarch, takes on the role of Marmee, the steadfast mother guiding her daughters through turbulent times.

First day of rehearsals for the cast

The March sisters themselves are played by a talented quartet: Natalie Dunne as the fiercely independent Jo, Jade Oswald as the graceful Meg, Megan Richards as the gentle Beth, and Jewelle Hutchinson as the fiery Amy. Completing the ensemble are Tom Richardson in the dual roles of Brooke and Bhaer, and Perry Williams as the ever-charming Laurie.

More Than Nostalgia

While steeped in history, the production is far from a mere period piece. Audiences can expect a show filled with laughter, tears, and a theatrical spirit that lifts the heart. It’s a story that balances nostalgia with fresh urgency — a reminder that the struggles and triumphs of the March sisters remain universal.
