REVIEW: The Lightning Thief at Newcastle Theatre Royal

The Lightning Thief

Newcastle Theatre Royal

Until Sunday 31 August 2025

The comedy musical, based upon the best selling book by Rick Riordan, lands in Tyneside during the final week of the summer holidays. Perfect timing for those wondering what to do with their children. A tight cast and the tricks of the theatre combined to deliver an origin story with plenty of pace.

Percy Jackson (Vasco Emauz) keeps getting kicked out of school but he doesn't know why. The show starts with a school trip to New York Metropolitan Museum of Art. The group are accompanied by their Latin teacher, Mr Brunner (Niall Sheehy) who has a detailed knowledge into Greek mythology and he tries to get the kids interested.

The trip also has Mrs Dodds, the substitute maths teacher who seems to also know a lot about the mythology too. After a brief discussion about the art, Percy finds himself alone with Mrs. Dodds, who promptly transforms into a Fury, a mythological Greek demon of Hades, and she starts having a go at Percy. Mr Brunner flies through on his wheelchair and hands Percy a pen that transforms into a sword and Percy fights off the creature. Afterwards Mr Brunner denies any involvement and so Percy gets kicked out of school for a sixth time.

At home, Percy's mother Sally (Simone Robinson), decides to send Percy to a summer camp for "Half-Bloods". He meets a satyr called Grover (Cahir O'Neill) and together they fight a minotaur - resulting in the death of his mother. At the camp he meets the camp director Mr D (Aidan Cutler),  who is also Dionysus - the god of wine, who explains the whole demi god thing (one parent is mortal, the other is a Greek god). Percy settles in and meets several other campers such as Silena (a daughter of Aphrodite), Katie (a daughter of Demeter), Clarisse (a daughter of Ares, performed by Ellie-Grace Cummings), and Annabeth (a daughter of Athena, performed by Kayna Montecillo).

After a game of capturing the flag Percy heads off on his quest o find a lightning bolt and thus prevent a war between the gods, accompanied by Annabeth and Grover and thus the story develops over the two hours (plus interval).

So I begin with a confession. I knew nothing about the story or the characters beyond the brief few words on the theatre website. I have not read the books or seen the movies. Having said that, I do love new shows and experiences. Opening night/press night saw the theatre full of younger faces. I know that I have said this before, but there is a need for high quality shows, that are not panto, aimed at the youth market if we are to entice the next generation of people who will love theatre. Joe Tracz's script did not patronize the youngsters nor did it overload their parents with too much exposition. By the same token, as a total newbie to the scenario, there was enough input in this origin story for me to know what the set up was and how we got to this point.

The songs by Rob Rokicki follow a fairly traditional musical format (the "I want" song etc) and in doing so they serve the story well, starting with the opener The Day I Got Expelled. There are nice performances from Simone Robinson and Vasco Emauz on Strong and Kayna Montecillo on My Grand Plan.  The band are on a raised platform behind a screen - which means that you cannot usually seen them. The screens and other lighting are used to great effect with Tim Deiling's lighting design and Matt Powell's video design filling the performance area. It tends to be the lighting rather than the props that change the scene and support a fluid transition between the scenes, which in turn helps maintain a good pace to the storytelling.

Clearly many of the younger members of the audience were more clued up on the story arc than I was and they found many of the in-jokes funny. It was wonderful to hear young people laughing from the stalls. Indeed the cheer at the end was young and energetic and thus the show has succeeded in delivering a strong fantasy story aimed at the, often ignored, youth market. It is pleasing to see strong female characters who get stuck in to the debates and the action. There were a few illusions, that tried to replicate the transitions that are easy to imagine in a book or recreate in a film, but pose more of a challenge in real life theatre.

As a newcomer to this phenomenon, I cannot comment on how this experience compares to the book or the film, but I can say I enjoyed my night at the theatre and I'd be happy to repeat the experience - especially if the other books are adapted for the stage.

The Son

Newcastle People’s Theatre

Monday 8 – Saturday 13 September 2025

The People’s Theatre in Heaton launches its brand-new Autumn/Winter Season this September with Florian Zeller’s powerful family drama The Son.

“I don’t know what’s happened... But something has. He’s changed.”

Zeller, one of the most important contemporary playwrights, is renowned for his intimate and unflinching portraits of family life. Following the People’s Theatre’s acclaimed 2023 production of The Father (later adapted into the Oscar-winning film starring Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman), the company now turns its attention to another chapter in Zeller’s family cycle.

At the heart of The Son is Nicolas, a 17-year-old struggling in the wake of his parents’ divorce. Feeling unable to live with his mother any longer, he hopes that moving in with his father Pierre, his new partner Sofia, and their baby will offer a fresh start. But as tensions rise, difficult questions surface: can love alone be enough to heal, and what happens when it isn’t?

Translated by Academy Award-winner Christopher Hampton, The Son is a searing exploration of adolescence, depression, and the often-painful gulf between generations. With youth mental health becoming an ever more urgent topic, Zeller’s work resonates with contemporary audiences in a deeply moving way.

Directed by Brian Green, the production features a talented local cast including Jack Stuart as Nicolas, Craig Fairbairn as Pierre, Brooke Milburn as Anne, and Annie Cairns as Sofia, alongside Mike Smith and Simon Harrison.

Season Highlights

The Son is the first offering in the People’s Theatre’s Autumn/Winter Season, which also includes Laura Wade’s razor-sharp black comedy Home, I’m Darling, the Dickensian romp Bleak Expectations, Agatha Christie’s classic whodunnit The Mirror Crack’d, and festive family favourite The Wizard of Oz.

The West End and Broadway smash hit musical is back on the road, stopping off at Darlington Hippodrome in March 2026.

The West End and Broadway smash-hit musical Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story opens this week at the Birmingham Hippodrome ahead of a UK tour covering the length and breadth of the country. From Norwich to Cardiff, Plymouth to Glasgow, Salford to Southampton and Bradford to Belfast, plus many more locations in between!

Loved by critics and audiences alike, Buddy tells the enduring story of the musical icon’s meteoric rise from his early Country and R&B musical influences, to becoming a major Rock & Roll innovator and international star, up until his legendary final performance at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa – and tragic, untimely death at the age of just 22. In 18 short months the bespectacled boy from Lubbock, Texas, revolutionised Rock & Roll – the sound of the youth – and how it was written, recorded and performed, influencing everyone from The Beatles to Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones to Fleetwood Mac. And Buddy’s influence wasn’t just limited to the sound. “He made it okay to wear glasses,” said John Lennon. “I was Buddy Holly.”

Boasting a multi-talented cast of actor-musicians, Buddy presents two terrific hours of music with over 20 of his greatest hits, including the timeless classics That’ll Be The Day, Peggy Sue, Oh Boy, Everyday and Rave On. With the Big Bopper’s Chantilly Lace and Ritchie Valens’ La Bamba, and rip-roaring versions of Shout and Johnny B. Goode completing a stellar musical line-up, Buddy is a not to be missed evening of family entertainment.

Birdwatching

Newcastle Northern Stage

Friday 25 October

Black Bright Theatre Company brings its award-winning folk horror Birdwatching to Northern Stage this October – a chilling exploration of paranoia, superstition, and the female experience that refuses to look away.

Three young women – Amelia, Poppy and Lauren – set out for a wild camping trip in the Northumberland forest. But as night falls and tensions rise, an unsettling presence circles their camp. What begins as teenage insecurity spirals into something darker, leaving a haunting question lingering in the air: who is watching who?

Following a critically acclaimed run at Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2024 – where it won Best New Writing at The Spookies and drew five-star reviews across the board – Birdwatching is now embarking on a Northern tour after international recognition at the Chengdu-Chongqing International Theatre Festival and a reworked premiere at Theatre Royal Bath.

Black Bright Theatre, founded in 2021, has quickly established itself as a bold voice in contemporary theatre. Female, queer, and neurodivergent-led, the company is dedicated to telling dark, northern-rooted stories that confront urgent issues including street harassment, LGBTQIA+ identity, and the cultural voyeurism of women and femme-presenting people.

Expect 75 minutes of gripping theatre that blends folk horror atmosphere with razor-sharp social commentary. With rave reviews hailing it as “a horror classic in the making” (Starburst Magazine), this is one not to miss.

Sisterhood and Storytelling: Little Women Brings Heart and Heritage to Darlington

Little Women

Darlington Hippodrome

Tuesday 30 September - Saturday 4 October, 2025.

Few novels have captured the imagination for as long as Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women. Generations have grown up with Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy March — four sisters navigating love, ambition, and loss against the backdrop of the American Civil War. Now, Anne-Marie Casey’s new stage adaptation is set to bring the March family to life on the Darlington Hippodrome stage as part of a major UK tour.

A Timeless Tale Reimagined

Though written more than 150 years ago, Little Women continues to resonate with modern audiences. Casey’s adaptation draws out the wit and warmth of Alcott’s original while celebrating its enduring themes of sisterhood, courage and self-discovery.

“The March sisters remind us that women can be bold, persistent, self-assured, and the heroes of their own story,” explains the creative team behind the production. It’s a message that feels particularly relevant today, echoing the renewed enthusiasm for the novel following Greta Gerwig’s acclaimed film adaptation.

A Cast of Familiar Faces

This new production brings together a cast brimming with stage and screen experience. Belinda Lang, well-known for her television work and extensive theatre career, plays the formidable Aunt March. Juliet Aubrey, who first came to prominence in the BBC’s Middlemarch, takes on the role of Marmee, the steadfast mother guiding her daughters through turbulent times.

First day of rehearsals for the cast

The March sisters themselves are played by a talented quartet: Natalie Dunne as the fiercely independent Jo, Jade Oswald as the graceful Meg, Megan Richards as the gentle Beth, and Jewelle Hutchinson as the fiery Amy. Completing the ensemble are Tom Richardson in the dual roles of Brooke and Bhaer, and Perry Williams as the ever-charming Laurie.

More Than Nostalgia

While steeped in history, the production is far from a mere period piece. Audiences can expect a show filled with laughter, tears, and a theatrical spirit that lifts the heart. It’s a story that balances nostalgia with fresh urgency — a reminder that the struggles and triumphs of the March sisters remain universal.

A Home for Great Stories

For Darlington Hippodrome, hosting the UK tour of Little Women is part of its ongoing mission to bring world-class theatre to the North East. The venue continues to offer audiences access to stories that are both timeless and immediate, providing a cultural heartbeat for the region.

Little Women runs at Darlington Hippodrome from Tuesday 30 September to Saturday 4 October, 2025. Tickets are available from the Box Office on 01325 405405 or online at www.darlingtonhippodrome.co.uk

Preview: Mr Blackpool at Newcastle Northern Stage,

🎭 A Cabaret at the End of the World

Mr Blackpool

Newcastle Northern Stage,

Thursday 6 November 2025

At a time when the cultural sector is doing its level best to re-imagine what live performance can be, Harry Clayton-Wright: Mr Blackpool’s Seaside Spectacular arrives like a glitter-bomb lobbed into the heart of the North East. And thank heavens it does. Part cabaret, part séance, part elegy for a lost Britain – this is an “end-of-the-pier show at the end of the world” that invites Newcastle audiences to embrace the spectacle, the satire and the sheer absurdity of survival through sequins.

Blackpool’s own Harry Clayton-Wright is no stranger to boldness. With a track record that includes award-winning theatre (Sex Education), queer heritage projects and even a cameo in Channel 4’s It’s a Sin, Clayton-Wright has long been a disruptive force in British performance art. Now, in collaboration with Marlborough Productions, he brings Mr Blackpool’s Seaside Spectacular to Northern Stage for one night only – Thursday 6 November – in partnership with Curious Arts, the region’s champion of LGBTQIA+ creativity.

🎪 What to Expect

Imagine a seaside postcard – sun-bleached and half-torn – then crank up the saturation, lace it with glitter, and set it against the backdrop of climate collapse or late-stage capitalism (or both). That’s the moodboard. Mr Blackpool’s Seaside Spectacular draws on the kitsch traditions of variety theatre, drag, magic and dance, but filters them through a 21st-century queer lens that’s equal parts homage and radical reclamation.

Clayton-Wright is joined by three Blackpool powerhouses:

  • Oliver Gregory, aka Miss Titty Kaka, an international showgirl and drag sensation with couture credentials and a wicked sense of theatrical mischief.

  • Aysh and Sam De Belle, the married dance duo and cultural agitators behind House of Wingz, who have helped to redefine what community-led performance can look like in the North West.

Together, they form a troupe steeped in the salty air of the Irish Sea but ready to dazzle on a Tyneside stage.

Expect a kaleidoscope of cabaret turns, autobiographical fragments, camp choreography and heartfelt nostalgia. This is theatre that resists neat categorisation – a variety show that knows the variety format is dead but refuses to stop dancing on its grave. There will be high kicks. There may be tears. Almost certainly there will be confetti.

🧵 Why It Matters

For Newcastle, this is more than just another tour stop. It’s a reminder that Northern Stage continues to be one of the most adventurous venues in the UK when it comes to programming queer-led work that challenges, entertains and matters. Partnering with Curious Arts, the theatre is signalling its ongoing commitment to making space for marginalised voices – not as an afterthought, but as centre stage.

And Mr Blackpool’s Seaside Spectacular is not just fun (though it is that, gloriously). It’s also a sly act of cultural archaeology – digging through the candyfloss and donkeys of seaside entertainment to ask what’s left when the tide goes out. What do we hold on to? Whose stories do we preserve? And how do we keep the show going when the world is literally on fire?

In Clayton-Wright’s hands, these questions are approached with both camp audacity and real emotional heft. As he puts it: “At the end of the world there’ll still be a showgirl kicking her legs behind her ears – and thank god for that.”

🎟️ Tickets:

For anyone who’s ever loved the seaside, survived a drag show, or wondered what happens when you throw Blackpool into a blender with Cabaret and Mad Max, this is your night. Bring your sense of humour, your dancing shoes and maybe – just maybe – a raincoat.

Because when Mr Blackpool comes to town, the glitter storm is inevitable.

News: ‘Life-Changing’ North East Playwriting Award runs for a second year

‘Life-Changing’ North East Playwriting Award runs for a second year

Live Theatre, Newcastle is hugely excited to announce the open call for the second North East Playwriting Award, following the huge success of previous winner Dogs On The Metro.

Open to all writers over the age of 16 who are from, living or working in the North East, the main award will offer a playwright a full-length commission fee with a view to a production for Live Theatre’s stage. A second Young Person’s Award (aged 16-25 years), will offer brand new talent a package of R&D support.

Emilie Robson, winner of last year’s Dogs On The Metro said: “Winning the North East Playwriting prize was genuinely life-changing. Opportunities for new playwrights can be thin on the ground so prizes like these are not only hugely validating but a genuine pipeline to seeing your work realised on stage.”

Connor Dorrian Young Person’s Award winner in 2024 said: “Winning the Under 26 North East Playwriting Award was a giant step in my career, opening many new doors while also giving me confidence to pursue my creative passion.

Working with Live Theatre has been surreal. They have helped develop not only my play but my skills as a writer.” Live Theatre’s Artistic Director Jack McNamara said: “We are so excited to open this award up for a second time, after being blown away by last year’s submissions and winners. Whether you are new to playwriting or an established name, all plays are read anonymously and will be given equal consideration. The North East clearly has a lot to say and we hope this open window encourages writers of all backgrounds and experience to take a punt and send their work in.”

In the buildup to the award, Live Theatre will also host the Great North Write on Saturday 6 September where, the day before the big run, writers are invited to Live Theatre to take over its spaces and write, plan and seek advice from staff and seasoned professionals.

The deadline for submissions to the North East Playwriting Award is Friday 30 October 2025. For further information on the award and other talent development opportunities go to www.live.org.uk

Preview: Gerry & Sewell Is Back at Newcastle Theatre Royal

Gerry & Sewell Is Back - Bigger, Belter And More Black And White!

Tickets now on general sale

An Eastlake Productions and Newcastle Theatre Royal Production

As excitement builds for the new Premier League season, Tyneside audiences have another reason to celebrate: Gerry & Sewell, Olivier award winning Jamie Eastlake's hit stage adaptation of Jonathan Tulloch’s novel The Season Ticket, is making a triumphant return to Newcastle Theatre Royal in 2026 from Tuesday 9 – Saturday 13 June.

Following its sensational, sell-out run last year, Gerry & Sewell is back by popular demand – and it’ll be bigger, belter, and more black-and-white than ever when it storms back onto the Newcastle Theatre Royal stage next year!

Photo: Von Fox
The iconic Grey Street venue was transformed into a sea of black and white in 2024 when Gerry & Sewell enjoyed a week-long sell-out run. Their promotion to the city’s biggest stage followed two sell out runs at Laurels Theatre in Whitley Bay in 2022 and a stint at Live Theatre in 2023.

Gerry & Sewell is a tale rooted in the North East. Adapted by Olivier Award-winning Jamie Eastlake from Jonathan Tulloch’s beloved novel The Season Ticket – which inspired the cult Geordie film Purely Belter – this raw, funny and heart-filled production tells the story of two Gateshead lads, Gerry and Sewell, and their mission to secure season tickets to watch their beloved Toon.

With nowt but each other, their wits, and the dream of standing in St James’ Park, the pair will stop at nothing to make their dream a reality – dodging radgie charvers, the social, and the odd madcap scrap merchant on the way. This is a story of hope and heartbreak that will resonate with anyone from the region and beyond. Whether you bleed black and white, red and white, or aren’t a fan at all, this is a story about far more than football.

The returning cast features audience favourites Dean Logan and Jack Robertson as the unforgettable Gerry and Sewell, with Becky Clayburn starring as Tyneside, and Erin Mullen reprising her powerful performance as Bridget McCarten. The show also features live music, puppet dogs, and the phenomenal support of Wor Flags in a production that is bold, hilarious, and proudly Geordie to its core.

Marianne Locatori, Chief Executive at Newcastle Theatre Royal said “Our region is rich in storytelling and creativity, we’re proud to bring this incredible local production back to our stage, performed by a phenomenal cast of North East talent.

Gerry & Sewell is the kind of theatre that resonates deeply; productions like this remind us that theatre can be authentic, accessible, heartfelt and inclusive, whilst giving voice to experiences and communities that are too often underrepresented on our stages. This is a show that speaks to different generations, to football fans and non-fans alike, and we’re thrilled to champion a story so deeply rooted in the region”

Jamie Eastlake said, “The reaction to the lads’ story has been unbelievable. We can’t wait to return to Newcastle Theatre Royal to turn the auditorium into a sea of black and white, and to share Gerry and Sewell’s story once again. This one’s for the Toon. And for anyone who's ever chased something that matters.
