Preview: Steffen Peddie On tour

You Bring a Problem, He Supplies an Answer, and a Laugh Along the Way!

99 PROBLEMS ANDTHE CHIPS ARENT ONE
Steffen Peddie
On Tour

Steffen Peddie is undertaking his first tour this year, with a show that’s a step away from the normal Stand Up shows.
The show is entirely created from the audience’s suggestions and improvised on the night, so it’s a comedy tightrope walk as anything can be asked!

Photo: Andy Hollingworth
The show is called “99 Problems and the Chips Aren’t One”.

The audience write the questions (“Problems”) and Steffen has to solve them, making it a different show every time.
The show has been performed six times so far, and has managed to cover varying topics from
“Who picks up guide dog poo”
“Why don’t sheep shrink in the Rain”
“Why is my partner sleeping with my brother”

The last one turned the show rather serious as a relationship breakdown happened mid gig, proving that anything can happen on the night!

The tour is entirely self financed and is playing venues large and small, from large regional Theatres to Village Halls as well as some major Comedy Festivals along the way.

"He holds the audience's attention throughout and leaves the stagewith me wanting more." The Journal

Steffen Peddie is a Stand up comedian from Newcastle upon Tyne.  He told his first joke on stage at 13 in his local youth club and has continued doing so since.  After minor success on the fledgling comedy circuit and appearing as comedy support with Ross Noble on two different National Kids Saturday Morning TV Shows he took a break from Stand Up and turned his time to becoming a professional wrestler.
Ten years of bending bones, wearing lycra in public and various chair shots took its toll on Steffen and he decided that it was time to call it a day. After performing at the Café de Paris in London in front of a star studded audience as part of Viz Magazines 25th Anniversary party he decided to call it a day and retire from the world of grappling.

"His forays into audience participation are good-natured and demonstrate a sharp improvisational mind." The Skinny

After a conversation with other comedians he decided to try stand up again “for a few shows” to see if it would be fun. Ten years later he has not stopped and has matured as an act with his time away.

Success has come his way in the form of a roll in the main cast of Jason Cooks BBC sitcom “Hebburn”. The award winning show ran for two series and a Christmas Special, and is still much loved by the public, both in the UK and with large international success.

Acting has continued with a number of TV adverts and short films, including Alan Moore’s (writer of Watchmen, The League of Gentlemen, V for Vendetta) first film “His Heavy Heart” as well as hosting Metro Radio and TFMs “NIGHTOWLS” phone in show as the regular guest host when Alan Robson is away.

Whatever was thrown his way, Peddie came back with a hilarious response and relatable stories from his own life that generated belly-aching laughter.” Shields Gazette

On top of this he is a proud member of The Geordie Rat Pack alongside Jason Cook, Glen Roughead and Neil Grainger. The four perform along with a fifteen piece band and play Swing classics in their own style. After selling out the Sage Gateshead earlier this year and selling out their next two shows, more are to be announced soon.

The comic’s ability to think on his feet was phenomenal and he had his audience in stitches” Hartlepool Mail

Review: Chris Ramsey on UK Tour

Chris Ramsey
UK Tour
September – December 2015

Chris Ramsey embarks on a UK tour with his brand-new show ‘All Growed Up’ from September 21st. This includes the recording of his new DVD during two shows at Newcastle’s Tyne Theatre and Opera House on the 7th October 2015.

Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee, star of BBC2’s Hebburn, Celebrity Juice regular and the man who once got pizza delivered to a moving train; Chris Ramsey announces All Growed Up; a brand new show which he will be debuting at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe before embarking on a major tour for 2015.

“Ramsey has the potential to be a mainstream hit, a cult favourite or almost anything in between” Stephen Armstrong, The Sunday Times

All Growed Up is a show about getting older, finding yourself, taking responsibility, realising you are no longer a child and all of the other terrifying realisations that come with being dragged kicking and screaming into modern adulthood. Chris will embark on a UK tour with All Growed Up on 21st September 2015, taking in a homecoming show and DVD record at The Customs House in South Shields and a night at London’s Bloomsbury Theatre.

"Frighteningly talented... tearing up every stage he lands on" James Mullinger, GQ

With his new stand-up show, All Growed Up, Chris Ramsey is wondering when it's time to become an adult. Now in his late 20s, he is a married man with a house and responsibilities. But some things are keeping him feeling like his old, childish self. Namely, a trampoline in his garden and a room full of Lego indoors.

Chris admits “The show has got nothing to do with age, it’s to do with being an adult and when adulthood happens to you. I don’t class my dad as an adult, for example, he’s such a child. It’s about me being dragged kicking and screaming into an adult world that I’m not really ready for. It’s not me saying I’m immature and just a kid, it’s me saying I don’t think I’m ready. People call it a quarter-life crisis but I’m not so sure. There’s this part of going, ‘take a day off from looking at bathrooms and play with your Lego’.”

Still, that trampoline could have got him into a bit of bother in the adult world recently. “I have an accountant, we go for meetings and it’s all done by the book, but I genuinely missed a meeting with him because it was a sunny day and I’d just bought the trampoline. So I played on that all day. I phoned him to tell him that. I could have lied but I have to be honest because I would have caught myself out, which is quite a childish thing. So, when do I become an adult and more importantly, should I become an adult?”

Whether or not he’s an adult in the conventional sense, Chris Ramsey has certainly matured into one of the brightest young stand-ups in the country. In 2008, he reached the final of the Chortle Student Comedian of the Year competition, and two years later he made his Edinburgh Fringe debut with Aggrophobic. In 2011, Offermation earned him an Edinburgh Comedy Award nomination, an accolade he was rightly proud of, stating at the time: I didn’t really see myself as a critically-acclaimed comic who gets nominated for that award but now I can go away and work in an office for the rest of my life and no one can take that away from me. That box is ticked.”

His appearances on the small screen have grown in number and stature too, peaking at the lead role he held in two series of BBC sitcom Hebburn, created and co-written by fellow Geordie stand-up (and Ramsey’s best man) Jason Cook, and starring another comic legend from those north-east parts, Vic Reeves.

He’s even capable of turning potential adversity into a positive for himself. In 2012, he dropkicked himself into a spot of bother on Sky’s Soccer AM when he said something quite rude in front of an audience he was led to believe would be game for such bawdy antics. After receiving a yellow card, he was dismissed after committing a second foul (language). Ramsey got over his initial embarrassment in the only way he knew how.

“I don’t regret doing it because I got a great story and a tour [The Most Dangerous Man on Saturday Morning Television] out of it. I’m not vile or disgusting; I mean, I have my moments but I don’t go over the top. I do swear, though I’m trying to curb that. When people hear you’ve been kicked off a TV show, they think ‘well, he’s obviously vulgar”. I thought I was toeing the line on that show, it was like being with mates and it was really laddish but in a juvenile sense; more boyish. But I’m really not a laddish person: when I’m in the pub and my mates start chanting, I don’t like that.”

Ramsey describes himself as having been ‘a bit of a talker’ at school and not overly keen on figures of authority, especially the ones that were shouting at him. But his memories of a ‘firm but fair’ headmaster at his comprehensive have been enriched by dealings in later life. “He had just been knighted and they invited me back to the school so I could do a gig, and make some speeches at the leavers do, which was all very cool. And he came to a gig on my last tour in Harrogate and didn’t tell me or ask for free tickets. When I spotted him sitting in one of the boxes, I ripped the piss out of him for being a knight and got a good ten minutes out of him. And that was the night I knew I was going in the right direction in comedy because at school I was constantly being told to stop talking and now the headmaster had paid to listen to me.”

Ramsey’s ability to entice complete strangers into handing over hard cash to hear him talk is undisputed. He reckons that his talent for holding court with a microphone may have been passed down. “I remember watching my dad at family parties and people standing around just listening. Sometimes he’d be telling a joke-joke but sometimes he’d just be telling a story, usually about him and my mum doing something. He’d be taking the mickey out of her and she’d be saying ‘oh, stop it, don’t tell them that’. It’s the exact same dynamic as me and my wife when I say I’m going to do a bit in a show about her. I remember watching Billy Connolly doing his Audience With and seeing Robbie Coltrane and Michael Parkinson in the crowd and thinking, ‘this guy is doing what my dad does only with all these famous people there’.”

While Chris Ramsey is very happy to have made the journey through the comedy ranks at a relatively speedy rate, leading to TV roles such as Hebburn and history-based reality show, Time Crashers. But there are still some downsides to his job: mainly a lot of standing around on set. “Don’t get me wrong, Hebburn is one of the things I’m most proud of; it was an absolute joy and I loved everyone to bits in it. But the waiting around? God almighty! But at the end of the day I’d rather be doing what I’m doing now than when I used to work in Hebburn in the inland revenue office. It’s human nature I suppose. You get used to everything and it could all change. But I’m still a lucky bugger and I try not to forget that.”

“A brilliantly engaging natural storyteller” Bruce Dessau, Evening Standard

Chris Ramsey has performed on BBC One’s Live at the Apollo and is a regular on Celebrity Juice (ITV2) and Virtually Famous (E4). He has appeared on Never Mind the Buzzcocks, Mock the Week (both BBC Two), Celebrity Mastermind (BBC One), 8 Out of 10 Cats (Channel 4) and Sweat the Small Stuff (BBC Three). Chris starred as Jack in two series of critically-acclaimed sitcom Hebburn, co-starring Vic Reeves on BBC Two which peaked at over 2 million viewers. Chris has over 340,000 followers on Twitter.

Review: Ken Dodd at Whitley Bay Playhouse

The Nicky Nocky Noo Happiness Show

Ken Dodd
Whitley Bay Playhouse
Sunday 9th August 2015

About four summers ago I read Dara O’Briain’s Tickling The English which covered his thoughts about the English as he toured around the theatres. A secondary theme were the stories about another performer who was also doing the circuit ahead of Dara – the living legend that is Ken Dodd. A man who rarely finish shows on the same day that he starts them. A performer in which you not only have to ask “have I got anything on that night?” but also “am I busy the next day?” I saw Ken Dodd in the 70s and I was determined to catch him again. The announcement that he was going to do a show with an early start was my chance to take the family along.

Am I exaggerating? Well, Saturday’s show had finished at 12:30am.

So with a fresh portion of Whitley Bay’s fish and chip inside us we sat down for five and a half hours entertainment.  At 87 years old, he is probably Britain’s most experienced comic. The jokes kept coming and he is very funny. As an artist that is on permanent tour he has great comic timing.

He is accompanied by Terry Bell and Malcolm Garrett on keyboards and drums which enables him to break into song. This helps break up the show and the audience frequently joined in on his many memorable hits. Most often the musical interludes were brief medleys of songs rather than whole songs.

An octogenarian is allowed to have some senior moments and the first half had occasions when Ken lost his thread of thought. This wasn’t helped by his frequent deviations from the story he was telling resulting in him forgetting which plot he was on. After three hours we had an interval and Ken came back on with all guns blazing and he was much sharper in the second half as he proceeded to keep the audience in the palm of his talented hand for another couple of hours.

This is a classic variety show and Ken had a couple of breaks for a pair of acts to have their turn. In the first half was the hugely talented Andy Eastwood. A multi-instrumentalist, he was able to pick up the pace whilst playing the banjo, ukulele, violin and guitar on a variety of popular songs. Starting the second half was Sybie Jones who did a few medleys of popular songs and classical pieces on piano and then another couple on the flute. Sybie was not my cup of tea to be honest. The North East is full of incredibly talented musicians and I must have been spoilt as I found the performance well below par.

Towards the end Ken gave us treat with his ventriloquism as he worked with his puppet Dicky Mint. After a very long show, he was able to keep the audience laughing.

Ken will continue to perform around the country for the rest of the year and the details are on his website. He is next in the north east when he visits Darlington Civic theatre on 8th & 9th October. He is well worth seeing. His humour is never crude, though occasionally not pc either. He starts his second half set with a flask and a box of sandwiches and it is worth planning how you’ll keep going during the 5+ hours.

Ken Dodd. Hilarious. Unique.  A legend.
