OMID DJALILI COMES TO BARNARD CASTLE

Omid Djalili
Barnard Castle Witham Arts Centre
Tuesday 1st March 2016

Comedian and actor Omid Djalili is to visit Teesdale as part of his new tour.

Djalili, whose career has seen him become a fixture on both the comedy circuit and the silver screen, will visit The Witham arts centre in Barnard Castle on Tuesday 1st March 2016 as part of his worldwide tour.

Following a sold-out four week West End residency and a sold-out season at the Edinburgh Festival, Djalili is now taking his new showIranalamadingdong to venues across Australia, North America and the Middle East before returning to the UK.

With over twenty years under his belt as a stand-up comedian, Djalili is one of the most recognisable comics in the country, notching up countless television appearances including Live at the Apollo, Have I Got News For You, and The Royal Variety Performance.

Armed with cheery observations, uncanny mimicry and old-school showmanship, the award-winning comic has been delighting audiences and critics with his energetic shtick since 1995.

As prominent on screen as he is on stage, Djalili has racked up an acting career as impressive as his comedy CV, with roles in Hollywoodblockbusters such as Gladiator, The Mummy, Pirates of the Caribbean and The Infidel.

He has also enjoyed success as a writer, having penned two series of sketch programme The Omid Djalili Show for the BBC, an episode of popular Sky anthology series Little Crackers, and his autobiography Hopeful, which was released last year.

Peter Dixon, of promoters Funny Way To Be, said: "Omid has a huge array of film, West End theatre and TV credits to his name, as well as a cabinets full of awards.  "It is as stand-up though where he truly comes into his own. Anyone who saw his last tour of major theatres will tell you of his razor sharp wit, boundless energy and expertly crafted cultural observations. We are elated that he has agreed to perform at our relatively small venue in Barnard Castle as part of his brand new tour."

Review: Hound of the Baskervilles at Gateshead Little Theatre

Howling With Laughter

Hound of the Baskervilles
Gateshead Little Theatre
Until Saturday 12th December 2015

Imagine an adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "Hound of the Baskervilles" in which there are more laughs than mystery? The story has been carefully adapted by Stephen Canny and John Nicholson. As an added twist, this production, by the Progressive Players of Gateshead, has all 16 characters performed by just 3 actors. The end result is very funny.

The show opens as Sir Charles Baskerville meets his untimely end. Philip Alexanders opens up an imaginary gate with creaking sound effects. In a simple gesture, the audience have already started laughing for all of the right reasons. Any worries are blown away as Daniel Wilde charges onto the stage to stop the action and read a production warning notice. The Play That Goes Wrong is currently going down a storm in the West End and it is that wonderful level of humour that has been achieved here.

James Race plays Sherlock Holmes as they try to solve the riddle of Baskerville’s death. Daniel Wilde is his faithful companion Watson. They discover that there is one final Baskerville remaining, his nephew Henry, who is coming across from Canada to visit the estate. They decide to head to Dartmoor to get to the bottom of the riddle. Holmes tries to remain the alpha male in each conversation even though Watson has his fair share of breakthroughs.

The cast clearly enjoy this show and it is the onstage chemistry between the 3 that helps make this show work. Behind the scenes, the crew also have comic timing with the lighting and sound effects and ensuring the props are ready.

At a time of year when theatres are full of shows for children it is great to see a show that adults will enjoy. Janet Wind’s direction has resulted in a slick performance. There is a nice combination of breaking that fourth wall and apparent “errors” on stage for the audience to laugh at.

Proving that laughter isn’t for children this is the perfect antidote for the pantomime season. This is a very funny show that is well worth seeking out.

Review: Steffen Peddie at Newcastle Stand Club

99 Problems And The Chips Ain’t One
Steffen Peddie
Newcastle Stand Club
5th October 2015

The Stand Comedy Club was rather full when we arrived but we found good seats all the same and settled down for what was to be a rib tickling evening even without a beer. I was designated driver. Steffen Peddie has grown and bloomed as a stand-up in the last few years. He’s no newcomer, as he says, he did his first comedy slot at the tender age of 13. 99 Problems but the Chips Ain’t One creates shows that are never going to be the same twice. The audience donates questions, about anything and Steffen attempts to answer them. Fortunately Steffen has a rich stash of stories and anecdotes, as well as ideas, that had me rocking with laughter.
The one-man show lasted 2 hours and at no point did Steffen “dry up”. The Stand also can provide snacks with your beers, which is very nice. This show did incredibly well getting such a crowd in on a Monday night. The night also raised  money for Big Pink Dress Fundraising, collecting for Breast Cancer Now, with Colin Plews adorned from massive wig to his toes in pink, and joined by his pink dressed lady friends to help out.
Steffen did end the night of fun with a serious point: we all go through difficulties and there’s too much dependency on social media for therapy. Just meet up with a friend, share a bag of chips and have a good chat. Problems seem so much smaller that way. I agree, Steffen, fancy some chips?

You Bring a Problem, He Supplies an Answer, and a Laugh Along the Way!

99 PROBLEMS ANDTHE CHIPS ARENT ONE
Steffen Peddie
On Tour

Steffen Peddie is undertaking his first tour this year, with a show that’s a step away from the normal Stand Up shows.
The show is entirely created from the audience’s suggestions and improvised on the night, so it’s a comedy tightrope walk as anything can be asked!

Photo: Andy Hollingworth
The show is called “99 Problems and the Chips Aren’t One”.

The audience write the questions (“Problems”) and Steffen has to solve them, making it a different show every time.
The show has been performed six times so far, and has managed to cover varying topics from
“Who picks up guide dog poo”
“Why don’t sheep shrink in the Rain”
“Why is my partner sleeping with my brother”

The last one turned the show rather serious as a relationship breakdown happened mid gig, proving that anything can happen on the night!

The tour is entirely self financed and is playing venues large and small, from large regional Theatres to Village Halls as well as some major Comedy Festivals along the way.

"He holds the audience's attention throughout and leaves the stagewith me wanting more." The Journal

Steffen Peddie is a Stand up comedian from Newcastle upon Tyne.  He told his first joke on stage at 13 in his local youth club and has continued doing so since.  After minor success on the fledgling comedy circuit and appearing as comedy support with Ross Noble on two different National Kids Saturday Morning TV Shows he took a break from Stand Up and turned his time to becoming a professional wrestler.
Ten years of bending bones, wearing lycra in public and various chair shots took its toll on Steffen and he decided that it was time to call it a day. After performing at the Café de Paris in London in front of a star studded audience as part of Viz Magazines 25th Anniversary party he decided to call it a day and retire from the world of grappling.

"His forays into audience participation are good-natured and demonstrate a sharp improvisational mind." The Skinny

After a conversation with other comedians he decided to try stand up again “for a few shows” to see if it would be fun. Ten years later he has not stopped and has matured as an act with his time away.

Success has come his way in the form of a roll in the main cast of Jason Cooks BBC sitcom “Hebburn”. The award winning show ran for two series and a Christmas Special, and is still much loved by the public, both in the UK and with large international success.

Acting has continued with a number of TV adverts and short films, including Alan Moore’s (writer of Watchmen, The League of Gentlemen, V for Vendetta) first film “His Heavy Heart” as well as hosting Metro Radio and TFMs “NIGHTOWLS” phone in show as the regular guest host when Alan Robson is away.

Whatever was thrown his way, Peddie came back with a hilarious response and relatable stories from his own life that generated belly-aching laughter.” Shields Gazette

On top of this he is a proud member of The Geordie Rat Pack alongside Jason Cook, Glen Roughead and Neil Grainger. The four perform along with a fifteen piece band and play Swing classics in their own style. After selling out the Sage Gateshead earlier this year and selling out their next two shows, more are to be announced soon.

The comic’s ability to think on his feet was phenomenal and he had his audience in stitches” Hartlepool Mail
