News: Little Theatre Grows As Studio Theatre Is Constructed

Little Theatre Grows As Studio Theatre Is Constructed

Tucked away next to the Saltwell Park, the Progressive Players have been putting on the shows in Gateshead for 101 years. They had just launched their centenary year celebrations in 2020 when the epidemic led to the shutdown. Rather than doing nothing, they decided to build a studio theatre on top of their existing auditorium. The ambitious project which cost the Little Theatre, Progressive Players and grant providers just short of half a million pounds is now complete and we were given an opportunity to have a look around.

The group have historically been no strangers to making the most out of adversity. Back in 1939 they had been sent notice to quit their previous site and so Misses Hope, Ruth and Sylvia Dodds purchased the current site in order to build the current theatre. The result was the only permanent theatre opened during World War 2. Opening was complicated by a German bomb landing in the park opposite blowing out all of the windows, however the group opened the theatre as planned in October 1943. So perhaps history is repeating itself as the extension was constructed during a potential crisis.

Building another floor on a building constructed during a war is a massive leap of faith and it is fair to say that the construction team and trustees of the Little Theatre had a number of issues to deal  with. The final result fits in with the 1930s art deco elegance of the original building. As neighbours have already commented, it looks externally like the building always had the extra floor attached. This is thanks to, in part, the rendering and windows matching the original construction.

Internally the theatre group has picked up a valuable space, which is also available for private lettings.  Access to the studio is either via the spiral staircase that has been built from the first floor bar area or via a normal staircase through the adjoining house that is owned by the theatre. The latter has also had a stairlift installed in order to provide access and new toilets have been added off that landing.  The spiral staircase is lit by natural light during the day through the traditional style small windows that fit the art deco style of the building. At night a large lighting feature has been installed which stands out.

Going through the entry door, with its diamond shaped window, you enter a very useful space. Whilst it was designed with theatre in mind, it struck me that the venue would also suit spoken word events and small music shows. In fact, it makes a perfect space for intimate comedy shows. The room has sound and lighting systems to feed the speakers, projector and two lighting bars. Shape wise,  the fact that the room mirrors the shape of the main stage below it is no accident. This sound proofed room can be used for rehearsals of the next production whilst the current show is being performed in the main room.

The design features around the original theatre have been replicated in the internal style of the room. This includes curves rather than sharp corners at the performance area end of the room. The coving on the ceiling has also been chosen to be in keeping with the remainder of the building.

Now, our visit took place as the contractors were still sorting out the snags and so the room will change slightly in appearance by the time the room has its official opening in October 2021. One of the lighting bars has yet to be installed and it is planned to move the heat exchanger so it will be less prominent.

The room is an exciting step forward for both the Little Theatre and the Progressive Players. It has already had a soft opening as it was used for a play reading but it will have a formal opening in October. The organisers need to be congratulated in ensuring that its appearance fits in with the original building both internally and externally. This historic small theatre now has an additional resource which will help it progress in the future.

Coming Events:

The main theatre reopens in October too. Lockdown in Little Grimley will be performed from Monday 11th - Saturday 16th Oct 2021. Details of forthcoming shows including a pantomime from the Bluebell Theatre Productions in December, can be found online at: https://www.littletheatregateshead.co.uk/whatson.html

Greetings and salutations!

Heathers the Musical (WhatsOnStage 2019 award for Best New Musical) is making its North East debut at Newcastle Theatre Royal in September on its first ever tour of the UK and Ireland.

Produced by Bill Kenwright and Paul Taylor-Mills, this high-octane black-comedy rock musical, based on one of the greatest cult teen films of all time, starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater, embarks on its first national tour.

The 2021 touring Class of Westerberg High includes Rebecca Wickes (Veronica Sawyer), Simon Gordon (JD), Maddison Firth (Heather Chandler), Merryl Ansah (Heather Duke), Lizzy Parker (Heather McNamara), Georgina Hagen (Ms. Fleming/Veronica’s Mom), Mhairi Angus (Martha Dunnstock), Liam Doyle (Kurt Kelly), Rory Phelan (Ram Sweeney), Andy Brady (Kurt’s Dad/Veronica’s Dad/Principle Gowan) and Kurt Kansley (Ram’s Dad/Big Bud Dean/Coach Ripper).

Completing the cast in the ensemble is Callum Connolly, Rhiane Drummond, Bayley Hart, Benjamin Karren, Sam Stones, May Tether and Daisy Twells.

Westerberg High’s Veronica Sawyer is just another nobody dreaming of a better day. But when she joins the beautiful and impossibly cruel Heathers, her dreams of popularity may finally come true. Mysterious teen rebel JD teaches her that it might kill to be a nobody, but it is murder being a somebody.

The award-winning writing team, Laurence O’Keefe and Kevin Murphy’s hit musical adaptation enjoyed successful runs in Los Angeles and New York; the UK productions are directed by acclaimed its original off-Broadway director, Andy Fickman. Choreography is by Thriller Live’s Gary Lloyd, design by David Shields, lighting by Ben Cracknell and sound by Dan Samson.

Heathers the Musical previously enjoyed two record-breaking seasons, launching at London’s The Other Palace and transferring to the Theatre Royal Haymarket in 2018.

In conjunction and running in parallel to the touring production, the hit show has also made its return to the West End’s Theatre Royal Haymarket for a strictly limited 12-week run, running until 11 September 2021.

Preview: Newcastle’s People’s Theatre are absolutely delighted to announce that it is re-opening its doors at last!

Newcastle’s People’s Theatre are absolutely delighted to announce that it is re-opening its doors at last!

They had no idea when they closed in March 2020 that they’d be gone so long, but the spirit of the People’s has stayed alive and well. Members have supported each other online with events including Zoom quizzes and play readings, plus loads of fundraising activities.

They’ve continued to bring great theatre to the community, staging three outdoor productions and producing their very first online production to rave reviews.

The doors reopen as they return to on-stage productions, starting in September with Charlotte Keatley’s highly-acclaimed My Mother Said I Never Should. Four generations of a family - Doris, Margaret, Jackie, and Rosie - encounter and struggle with motherhood, marriage and work in this powerful and compassionate drama.

They then head to Elizabethan England in Blackadder II, bringing three of the best and funniest episodes of this legendary BBC comedy to our stage.

The comedy continues with a fabulously farcical retelling of Sherlock Holmes’ most famous case The Hound Of The Baskervilles, and warm and witty festive comedy The Flint Street Nativity.

And after a hiatus from Pantoland last year, they’ve got a hilarious and fun-filled Sleeping Beauty in store for December. Don’t snooze, though, tickets always sell fast for the People’s Panto!

In order to ensure the theatre can keep up-to-date with Government guidance and what the audiences have told them about their experiences coming back to the People’s, they are opening booking in stages. Right now tickets for My Mother Said I Never Should and Blackadder II are available to book, plus Sleeping Beauty. Booking for the other plays will open shortly.

And as everyone eases out of restrictions, the theatre appreciates that everyone will be going at a different pace. To help audiences return to the People’s confidently, you have the option of some socially distanced performances and flexible exchanges so you won’t miss out whatever happens.

The theatre explained “Over the last difficult and uncertain seventeen months we’ve been absolutely bowled over by the generosity and support from our audiences, members, friends and supporters. Our motto over this time has been that the phoenix will rise and we can’t wait to get back to what we love – making great theatre and entertaining audiences!”

Derren Brown: Showman

Sunderland Empire

Tuesday 7th - Saturday 11 September 2021

Tickets: https://tinyurl.com/SundDerrenBROWN *

Derren Brown, the popular multi-award winning master of mind control and illusion, will be touring the UK with SHOWMAN, his first new live show for six years, with a date at Sunderland Empire from Tuesday 7 - Saturday 11 September 2021. This will be followed by a mammoth 8-month second leg of the tour from March 2022 – October 2022.

The content of Showman remains a closely-guarded secret but Derren has revealed: “The heart of the show is about remembering what’s important. Like how the very things that we find most isolating in life - our fears and difficulties - actually connect us. Framed with what I think will be some extraordinary demonstrations of my voodoo”.

He adds: “Strangely, the show pre-Covid was, at its heart, about how the tough things in life that we feel isolate us, tend in fact to bring us together, and be the very things that we share. And then lockdown happened, which was a strangely literal playing out of that theme. So although the benefit of extra time has allowed us to re-work the show a little and change some aspects of it, its heart has remained the same”.

Derren’s live shows have won him two prestigious Olivier Awards – for Something Wicked This Way Comes (2006) and Svengali (2012) and he has received more Olivier nominations and wins than any other one-man show in theatre history. He has played to sold-out houses across the country every year since 2003 to over 1.6M people. Previous shows, Infamous, (2013, 2014), Miracle (2015, 2016) and Underground (2017, 2018) have also enjoyed critically acclaimed seasons in London’s West End. In 2017 he made an award-winning US stage debut at the Atlantic Theater in New York with Derren Brown: Secret, which transferred to Broadway, enjoying a sell-out season at the Cort Theatre, New York until Jan 2020.

Derren Brown: Showman is presented by Michael Vine, Andrew O’Connor, Derren Brown and Paul Sandler for Vaudeville Productions Ltd. It is directed by Andrew O’Connor & Andy Nyman and written by Andy Nyman, Andrew O’Connor & Derren Brown. General Manager is John Dalston and marketing is by Helen Snell Ltd
