Preview: Remythed at Newcastle Live Theatre

A Joyful Queering of Ancient Legends

Remythed

Newcastle Live Theatre

Tuesday 24 – Wednesday 25 June 2025

History gets a fabulous makeover this June at Live Theatre as Bet’n Lev Theatre brings their acclaimed debut Remythed to Newcastle. Following a sold-out run at the VAULT Festival and rave reviews at Edinburgh Fringe, this bold, buoyant production reclaims and reimagines queer stories from the past — infusing them with joy, warmth, and mischief.

Five actors — including co-creators Roann Hassani McCloskey and Joel Samuels — breathe life into over 30 characters from across time, blending ancient myth with modern identity. From Sheherazade to Lady Godiva, these familiar figures are reshaped through a queer lens, inviting audiences to see history not as it was told, but as it could have been.

More than a retelling, Remythed is a celebration — of community, friendship, and love. It shuns tired tropes of trauma in queer narratives and instead offers what the creators call a "hug-in-a-mug" experience — silly, moving, and heartfelt.

Whether you're a history buff, a mythology fan, or simply craving a fresh and joyful night out, this 60-minute whirlwind of costume-swapping, laughter, and queer pride is not to be missed.
