Take Home a Piece of History: Tyne Theatre & Opera House Launches Gallery Seat Fundraiser
Newcastle’s beloved Tyne Theatre & Opera House has announced a rare opportunity for theatre lovers to own a tangible piece of its remarkable history. As part of a significant restoration project beginning this summer, the Grade I listed venue is replacing all of the seats in its iconic gallery tier — and you could take one home.
In exchange for a donation of £25 or more, supporters can claim one (or several) of the original seats that have served audiences for generations. But you’ll need to act quickly — the deadline to donate is Friday 11th July at 5pm, with seat collection scheduled for the week commencing Monday 14th July 2025.
Tyne Theatre & Opera House CEO, Jonathan Higgins, shared the heart behind the initiative:
"Our audiences are the heart and soul of our heritage venue, and we wanted to offer them the chance to own a unique piece of the theatre’s history while directly supporting its future."
This exciting fundraiser supports the broader restoration of the gallery, which will not only replace worn seating but also restore the theatre’s traditional sightlines, enhancing comfort, safety, and the overall experience for future audiences.
The project is being made possible through a combined effort: funds raised by the Tyne Theatre & Opera House Preservation Trust, and a £247,500 grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
Project Director David Wilmore described this as the first step in a larger mission:
"Restoring the gallery is the beginning of an ambitious project to fully restore the whole site in a sympathetic manner that also caters for 21st-century comfort. We are incredibly grateful to the National Heritage Lottery Fund for their continued support on this journey of re-discovery which will focus on our local arts communities."
A Theatre Steeped in History
Opened in 1867, the Tyne Theatre & Opera House is not just a venue — it’s one of Newcastle’s most treasured cultural landmarks and one of only a few surviving Victorian theatres in the UK with original wooden stage machinery still intact. Designed by the influential theatre architect William Parnell, the Tyne Theatre has welcomed generations of performers and audiences through its doors.
Over the years, it has been home to everything from opera and variety shows to modern stand-up comedy and community theatre. Its rare Victorian stage technology, considered one of the finest of its kind in Europe, has earned the building Grade I listed status, recognising its national historical importance.
Despite challenges, including periods of closure and changing management, the theatre has survived thanks to passionate local support and the tireless work of the Tyne Theatre & Opera House Preservation Trust.
This latest restoration project is another step in safeguarding the theatre’s future while honouring its extraordinary past.
If you’d like to own a seat and support the continued preservation of this historic venue, you can make a donation through the theatre’s Crowdfunder campaign here: crowdfunder.co.uk/p/gallery-seats.
