Michael Slavin Named New Chief Executive of Newcastle's Northern Stage
Newcastle upon Tyne – Northern Stage, the largest producing theatre in the North East, has announced the appointment of Michael Slavin as its new Chief Executive. The appointment marks a major new chapter for one of the region’s leading cultural institutions.
Michael Slavin brings with him over two decades of experience in theatre leadership, commercial operations, and hospitality. He joins Northern Stage from 11Arches—the charity behind the spectacular open-air show Kynren in County Durham—where he served as Chief Operating Officer. Prior to that, he was Interim Chief Executive of York Theatre Royal.

“I am absolutely delighted to be joining Northern Stage as Chief Executive,” Michael said. “I first visited Northern Stage over 20 years ago and have been a frequent visitor ever since. This theatre holds, along with the city of Newcastle and its people, a very special place in my heart.”
He continued, “After my time at York Theatre Royal and most recently at Kynren, the opportunity to return to producing theatre—particularly in the North East and especially at Northern Stage—was irresistible. I can’t wait to get started.”
Slavin’s appointment also signals a shift in leadership structure at Northern Stage, with the introduction of a sole Chief Executive role that will see him work closely with Artistic Director Natalie Ibu.
Natalie Ibu said, “I'm thrilled to welcome Michael to Northern Stage. He brings an infectious sense of possibility, curiosity and passion—not just for theatre, but for the North East. Since his relationship with Northern Stage began as a student at Newcastle University, this really is a welcome back!”

Michael will formally take up the role in October 2025. Until then, interim leadership arrangements remain in place, with Sian Alexander continuing as Interim Executive Director and Amy Fawdington as Interim Deputy Executive Director.
With a renewed sense of ambition and energy, Northern Stage continues to build on its mission to produce bold, inclusive, and joyful theatre from its city centre home.
