John Godber brings legacy of the
miners’ strikes to Gala

Shafted!
Durham Gala Theatre
Monday 15th and Tuesday 16th February 2016

Miners will take centre stage as BAFTA Award-winning playwright John Godber brings his latest play to Durham’s Gala Theatre.

Shafted! follows the lives of former pitman Harry and his wife Dot – played by Godber and  his wife Jane Thornton - in the thirty years after the strikes of 1984, as the pair struggle to settle into new jobs and to rebuild their community.

Suddenly they were thrown together, with new battles to fight and new jobs to hold down; from window cleaning in Wakefield to running a boarding house in Bridlington; but life would never be the same again.

Fuelled with eye-watering honesty and true Yorkshire grit, this is a hilarious account of those whose jobs had been taken and whose communities had been destroyed, and how they fought back after being Shafted!

The pits may have gone but the shifts are still seismic!

The John Godber Company was formed in March 2011 by celebrated playwright John Godber and his wife Jane Thornton, following John’s departure from Hull Truck Theatre after 26 years as its artistic director.

John Godber was born the son of a miner in Upton, West Yorkshire. He trained as a teacher of drama at Bretton Hall College, Wakefield. Whilst he was head of drama at Minsthorpe High School, the school he attended as a student, he won every major award at the National Student Drama Festival between 1981 and 1983.

His plays include: Bouncers, Up ’n’ Under, April in Paris, Teechers, Poles Apart, Blood, Sweat and Tears, Cramp, Happy Jack, September in the Rain, Salt of the Earth, Passion Killers, Happy Families, Up ’n’ Under ll, Gym and Tonic, Dracula, Lucky Sods, Hooray for Hollywood, Weekend Breaks, It Started With a Kiss, Unleashed, Thick As a Brick, Big Trouble in the Little Bedroom, Seasons in the Sun, On a Night Like This, Our House, Departures, Men of the World, Reunion, Screaming Blue Murder, Black Ties and Tales, Perfect Pitch, Going Dutch, Christmas Crackers and Crown Prince.

Within an extensive career in writing and directing in TV and film, John devised the BBC Two series Chalkface, wrote and directed The Ritz and also worked with Anthony Minghella on Grange Hill and Phil Redmond on Brookside; his screenplay 8 My Kingdom for a Horse, starring Sean Bean, was nominated for an Alternative BAFTA. John’s first feature film, Up ’n’ Under, was released in January 1998.
In 2005 he co-wrote and directed Odd Squad for BBC Two, which was shot in Hull using local actors. Odd Squad won two BAFTAs in the Schools Drama category and in the BAFTA Original Writer section.

Jane Thornton’s stage writing credits include Say It With Flowers (Hull Truck Theatre), All the Fun of the Fight (Theatre Royal Wakefield), I Want That Hair and Wuthering Heights (Hull Truck Theatre).

For television, she co-wrote the BAFTA-winning Odd Squad (BBC), Bloomin’ Marvellous, Shakers, Chalk face (BBC) and It’s Happy Hour Again (Channel 4).

As an actor, Jane appeared in the original theatre productions of Up ‘n’ Under,  Happy Jack, September in the Rain and April in Paris and for TV, Coronation Street, Heartbeat, Hollyoaks and the screen plays of Up ‘n’ Under, My Kingdom for a Horse where she played opposite Sean Bean, and Thunder Road.

Live Theatre welcomes three thought-provoking pieces of visiting theatre this March

Live Theatre welcomes three thought-provoking pieces of visiting theatre in March, all powerful one woman shows with strong female lead characters. The plays cover themes from a young woman out of control on drink and drugs in Cardiff, to a mother discovering her young son had been shown pornography by a classmate and one woman’s hilarious quest to find ‘the one’.
Iphigenia In Splott  which comes to Live Theatre at 7.30pm on Friday 11 and Saturday 12 Marchlooks at the world through the eyes of Effie, a hard-nosed, unemployed young woman who spends her days in a careless spiral of drink, drugs and drama. Whilst the story is set in Cardiff, this is a tale that is relevant in every city across the UK.

Inspired by the enduring Greek myth Iphigenia In Splott is written by Gary Owen, whose play Crazy Gary’s Mobile Disco was a success at Live Theatre in 2001.

Sophie Melville received the Stage Award for Acting Excellence 2015 and has also just been awarded Best Actress in the English language at the Wales Theatre Awards for her portrayal in the lead role of Effie. This powerful drama also won the Best Play in the UK Theatre Awards 2015 and was nominated for Best Playwright in the Wales Theatre Awards.
Punching the Sky at 7.30pm on Wednesday 9 March, a new play about porn, parenting and pressure is a very personal response to the extraordinary national media storm that followed when writer Lizi Patch dared to blog about her 11 year old son stumbling across some hardcore online pornography. It delves into the democratic space of the internet and shines a light on the contradictory nature of our feelings about sex, censorship and parenthood.
Memoirs of a Bunny Boiler at 8pm on Wednesday 16 and Thursday 17 Marchis a hilarious one woman show about a girl’s desperate attempt to find ‘the one’ and her encounters with cult leaders, Oxford graduates and junkie lookalikes. It is written and performed by Spotlight nominee, Rachel Jackson and was a success at last year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

News: An Exciting time for Tyne Theatre

An Exciting time for Tyne Theatre & Opera House: Restoration, Fundraising & a TV Appearance!

It’s been just over a year since Tyne Theatre & Opera House was given a new lease of life when a new company, Tyne Theatre & Opera House Ltd was set up to operate and manage the building, and since then things have gone from strength to strength.

Alongside the Preservation Trust who own the building, Tyne Theatre & Opera House Ltd’s aim is to restore and protect the magnificent Grade 1 listed Victorian theatre so that future generations can continue to benefit from the remarkable building.

One year on, the future is looking incredibly bright for the theatre. 2016 is full of stellar shows, from huge comedy names such as Sarah Millican, Dylan Moran and Katherine Ryan to visits from touring shows such as the award-winning Avenue Q and Footloose: The Musical (with more shows still being booked!)

Not only do these great shows continue to draw in impressive audience figures, but we are thrilled to say that restoration of the theatre is slowly but steadily underway with various repairs and improvements. Redecoration of the theatre’s Bistro Bar is now complete thanks to hours of work from our dedicated volunteers, and many seats in the auditorium have been completely reupholstered with many more still to be replaced.

There is still much to be done, and this would not be possible without the hard work of our volunteers and generosity of the public. As a not-for-profit organization that receives no outside funding, Tyne Theatre & Opera House relies upon donations and fundraisers to ensure its continuing existence.

After the huge success of last year’s The Pirates of Penzance, this year’s fundraising production is Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street which takes place from Wednesday 2nd to Saturday 5thMarch.

This production is presented by Friends of Tyne Theatre & Opera House, all of whom are volunteers, and is directed by professional actress Lynne Wilmot whose credits include the Les Miserables movie and National UK tour, London Road, Purely Belter, and the upcoming films from Disney and Universal respectively, Beauty and the Beast and The Huntsman Winter’s War. Performed with a large live orchestra, Sweeney Todd looks set to be another brilliant success.

Last but certainly not least, Tyne Theatre & Opera House is thrilled to be appearing on BBC1’s Inside Out on Monday 1st February at 7.30pm: a fantastic way to round-up a successful first year!

Theatre Director Joanne Johnson says: “I’m thrilled to be a part of the Tyne Theatre & Opera House team during this exciting time. As we begin to start restoration work on the beautiful building and our theatre programme continues to expand with a whole host of incredible shows, it’s great to see how many people are enthusiastic about our beautiful Victorian theatre.”

Tickets for Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street can be purchased online at the following link: http://tynetheatreandoperahouse.uk/events/sweeney-todd-the-demon-barber-of-fleet-street-presented-by-friends-of-tyne-theatre-opera-house/

“Where once one house stood, there now stands eight.  A whole new neighbourhood, secured behind a gate.”

Gated Community
by Handheld Arts
Newcastle Alphabetti Theatre
Wednesday 17th - Saturday
20th February 2016

Handheld Arts bring their latest theatre production 'Gated Community' to Newcastle for its North East premiere at Alphabetti Theatre. The production premiered last November at Slung Low's HUB, Lawrence Batley Theatre and Rosemary Branch as part of The Little Angel's SUSPENSE adult puppetry festival.

'Gated Community' follows in the traditions of horror anthology films and features eight twisted cautionary tales told using a playful and cinematic style of shadow puppetry. Each tale takes a satirical look at modern day life through parodies of classic horror stories and movies. One tale called 'The Ocado Man', is a re-imagining of 'The Wicker Man' with a home food delivery driver replacing the role of Sergeant Howie.

Alex Garfath, Co-Artistic Director of Handheld Arts said, “The idea for Gated Community came about after we noticed a large family home being torn down and a few smaller houses being built in it's place, along with an entire new road. The addition of iron gates at the entrance of the road got us wondering about who would be coming to live there - it looked a little bit silly, like a kind of boutique prison. Then we started to have ideas about nightmare neighbours and how we like to think we are safe in our homes but they are actually the place most accidents take place. Gated Community developed from those initial ideas and became what we like to think of as a Homes Under the Hammer-Horror.”

Review: Steffen Peddie's Chat Show Thing at Newcastle Stand

Steffen Peddie's Chat Show Thing

Newcastle Stand Comedy Club

Sunday 31st January 2016

Steffen Peddie
There was a time when Terry Wogan, who sadly died today, dominated the television ratings with a chat show with a wide variety of guest. The way in which he was better than Michael Parkinson, and much better than Jonathan Ross, is that he would let his guests take centre stage. Terry would throw an open question and sit back as the guest was able to articulate their feelings and values. It wasn’t about Terry but the interesting people that sat opposite him. The audience felt the pain, the excitement and the joys of human emotion.

Fast forward to 2016 and Steffen Peddie hosts a monthly Sunday slot in the intimate confines of the Stand Comedy Club. The January show had a healthy crowd who were entertained by a canny crop of guests. Steffen much in the mould of Wogan, allowing each guest to open up without incessant interruptions.  The end result is a classic chat show.  Except there are no cameras, no censors and anything can slip out.

First up was a warm up act, The Mimic Men,comprising of local breakfast radio star Alfie Joey and Cal Halbert. Starting with the funny A-Z of impressions, and concluding with a version of Frozen, the pair used a variety of impersonations to entertain.  They are in with a great chance of success when they appear at Britain’s Got Talent later in the year.

Steffen started the show to explain that everyone had offered their service for free so that all of the money taken could be used to help little Kian Musgrove who’s story has been in the newspapers recently. The 3 year old lad needs treatment abroad as he is suffering from a second case of cancer. A fund raising page is on the internet at http://www.kapipal.com/caringforkian.

Steffen started the comedy with some inappropriate old adverts and some of the crazy stuff from the internet. It just goes to show that Dave Gorman hasn’t got the monopoly on funny powerpoint presentations.

Scott Tyrell
The first guest was the 2015 BBC Edinburgh Festival Poetry Slam champion Scott Tyrell( NETG News LINK). The conversation was a fascinating mix of inspiration for the poet and the nature of performing. The North East’s love of the brevity of language was celebrated.

Rob Temple
Hypnotist Rob Temple has turned from a child magician to an adult hypnotist. Steffen’s approach is never patronising. He gets the guest to discuss the questions that the audience are wondering about hypnotism.

Stephen Cochrane
Music came from ex-This Ground Moves songwriterStephen Cochrane. During his 2 sets Stephen played a mixture of new and older material. Steffen is clearly a fan. It is a shame that both of Stephen’s new albums have not seen the light of day yet.  His music has featured on tv during the CSI series and deserves a bigger audience.

Vicki Elliott
The last guest also starred in the tv series Hebburn. Vicki Elliott was happy to discuss her appearance at Northern Stage next month in Get Carter, Hebburn and the Harry Hill written X-Factor musical. (Get Carter preview LINK: ). The format of the show enabled Vicky to open up with her amusing anecdotes.

The evening finished with questions from the audience which brought about a number of laughs.

Photo: Andy Hollingworth
The show works as Steffen is a great host who puts everyone at ease so they feel they can talk. If Carlsberg made chat shows then this would be it.

Steffen is currently touring his solo show (’99 Problems’ NETG Review LINK) and the chat show returns each month at the stand from which tickets can be bought from The Stand:  http://www.thestand.co.uk/whats-on/Newcastleor from their box office on 0191 300 9700.
