We’ve announced some brilliant acts already and we still have more incredibly talented individuals we can't wait to reveal.

“When local charities ask for comedians to promote their events, Felt Nowt answers the call – and over the last three of so years we’ve helped over £20,000 for local good causes, while also using the power of laughter to boost people’s self-esteem, confidence and wellbeing.

“But as a volunteer organisation there’s only so much we can do - this special show will allow us to do so much more.”

The Cosmic Shambles Network are delighted to announce the first ever live UK Tour of Helen’s award winning podcast The Allusionist.

The Allusionist is a podcast about language: how and why we humans use it the ways we do, the funny and frustrating ways it shapes our words, thoughts, and lives - and how, just when we think we can tame it and ride it around, like a rodeo beast, it throws us defiantly into the sawdust.

Called “one of the funniest and most educational podcasts around” by The Guardian and “linguistically zesty“ by The New Yorker, The Allusionist has previously made hit stage shows about speed-typing champions, protest cakes and the history of the word ‘Ms’. Now celebrating its tenth year, the Allusionist presents a brand new live show, Souvenirs, telling the story of a friendship torn apart by… a font.

A font? Look, font-related emotions can get VERY heated. An Allusionist live show isn’t just watching Helen make the normal podcast on stage, it’s a SHOW show and features live music from the incredible Martin Austwick

REVIEW: Come From Away at Newcastle Theatre Royal

Come From Away

Newcastle Theatre Royal

Until Saturday 17 August 2024

A show has landed in Newcastle this week that has such a relenting pace that it runs for 100 minutes without an interval. In doing so it maintains a powerful intensity that keeps the audience engaged right up to the point that they spring up on their feet to give a spontaneous organic, and very well deserved, standing ovation.

I had heard the rumours that this was a "Must Watch" even though the plot line seemed unusual for a passionate musical about the very best of people in the worst of situations. I now totally get it. Like the tour-de-force that was Our Ladies -  the storyline delves into the human condition, discusses relatable characters but it doesn't take its foot off the accelerator. The 12 strong cast and a 9 piece band, under the skilful assistant musical director Phil Cornwell, create the twists and turns - whilst remembering to show the funny side of life.

The programme, which I read afterwards, details the true stories that writers Irene Sankoff and David Hein have incorporated into this vibrant tale. That element of "non-fiction can be stranger than fiction" is borne out here.

So what is it about? If you cross the Atlantic Ocean on a plane, chances are that the first bit of land you'll see is Newfoundland. Gander has a large airport because in the old days, before jet planes, they used to land here to refuel before completing their journey to the US or Canada. Today, if cabin crew hear that they are making a stop at Gander then they know that there is a serious issue.

Anyhow, on the morning of the 9th September 2001 (aka 9/11) they had to land 38 planes containing over 6,500 people and a menagerie of 19 animals - including a pair of bonobos - a male and a pregnant female. Not knowing when the US airspace would reopen, the passengers were kept on the planes for up to 28 hours (as the occupants were considered a potential threat)  before the neighbouring towns were able to accept the huge influx of people. They needed somewhere to eat, sleep - and make phone calls (one plane rang up a bill of $13K telling their folks that they were safe).

The musical covers both the stories of the islanders who welcomed the people and those on the planes. The cast play multiple roles, though it is obvious by the arrangement of the chairs etc whether it is the plane crowd or the townsfolk. At no point did I have an issue following the story.

The show works for a number of reasons: characters, situation, comedy and the careful use of music.

Character-wise, from the island we have Nicholas Pound as the local mayor Claude who is struggling with a bus strike and Natasha J Barnes as Janice who is a local reporter on her first week as a journalist. Bonnie (Rosie Glossop) who works at a local animal shelter and teacher Beulah (Amanda Henderson) have no idea have the next few ideas will change them as the morning starts.

On the planes we meet a pilot Beverley (Sara Poyzer), who in 1986 was the first female captain on American Airlines, and the mother of a New York Fireman Hannah (Bree Smith) who will soon be seeking news of loved ones. There is the couple who are also business partners Kevin J (Kevin Yates) and Kevin T (Mark Dugdale) who, along with others, have no idea how the community will accept them. Indeed we get the initial fears of those who are used to a much higher crime rate struggling to cope with the outpouring of support from the local community.

There is also a love story as a pair of passengers find plenty in common as they are stuck together - what else do you do when you're stuck on a plane for a day. The tale of American Dianne (Kirsty Hoiles) and English Nick (Daniel Crowder) is a nice sub-plot through the show.

Each character is usually developed enough for you to care and have empathy in their situation and this is important for the whole emotion thing to work. The script is really good as it manages to both acknowledge the darker side of the day whilst peppering the action with lots of light hearted moments. It is rare to witness a theatre crowd laugh as frequently in a musical.

The song serve that modern classic function of either setting up a situation or for the characters to express themselves. None of them are filler and the do help with the story. The folky delivery of much of the music and having the musicians on the fringes so they can join in when appropriate also helps with the energy of the show.

Director Christopher Ashley has managed to make the many stories flow in a show that has no down time for set changes. The result is a joyous celebration - a triumph of human compassion in one of the darkest moments of modern history.

A minor concern, though, are that some of the characters that are on the fringes of the story, or the reactions to those characters, can come across as stereotypes as their brief time on stage gives limited context or opportunity to go past the expected reactions. The difficultly with the setting (9/11) is that there was a lot of suspicion as a result of the attacks and hindsight can ignore that we didn't know what was going on initially.

I guess regular readers will have picked up that I really loved the show. I did,  it was one of the best shows I have seen since lockdown. Seriously, given our national news recently - I needed this show to cheer me up and it succeeded. I loved the energy and the passion. A great cast deserved that standing ovation in this five star show.

Wendi Peters talks about her life on the road and in a habit

Sister Act The Musical

Darlington Hippodrome

Monday 9 - Saturday 14 September 2024

Star of stage and screen, Wendi Peters, has joined the convent as Mother Superior in the UK tour of Sister Act The Musical which comes to Darlington Hippodrome in September. We caught up with Wendi to chat all about life on the road, and in the habit!

Wendi Peters in Sister Act

You’re a regular face on TVs across the country, much-loved for your time on Coronation Street as Cilla Battersby-Brown, but you began your career in theatre. What keeps bringing you back to the stage?

Yes! Although, while I am best known for Cilla Battersby-Brown in Coronation Street, I did start my career in theatre. I trained in musical theatre for three years and did ten years before Corrie on stage in musicals, plays and comedies – so it really is part of me. It is what I adore. It is why I wanted to be in the business in the first place. My mum used to take me to see all the big musicals when they came to Manchester and that is when I really knew that’s what I wanted to do for a career – there is nothing like the stage. There is nothing like a live audience and being part of a company, so that is what always brings me back.

Sister Act is a much-loved movie as well as a musical. Were you aware of the show before joining?

Sister Act is a much-loved movie and musical, but I have to admit – I’ve never seen the movie! But I have seen the musical quite a few times. A few times at the London Palladium – I think that was 2009 – and just fell in love with the fun of it, the score and what a great time everyone was having, both cast and audience.

Numerous people have taken on the role of Mother Superior – Maggie Smith on screen, Lesley Joseph and Sue Cleaver on stage. How would you describe your characterisation?

Quite a few actresses now have played Mother Superior. I think, in terms of my characterisation, the nice thing is that everyone who has played Mother Superior has been so different – not just physically but within their acting and characterisation – I am going to play her American and quite stern but with a heart. And hopefully a little bit cheeky, too!

People often say, to survive in musical theatre you need to live like a nun – how will you be looking after yourself on the road?

Yeah, musical theatre is hard. I have done musicals over the years for a very long time and there is, sort of, a rule – not quite a rule but you do have to look after yourself both physically and mentally. Especially on tour, you’re going to be away from your loved ones. And physically – I do a lot of walking on tour. I am going to be taking the dog on tour so I will be walking the dog every day and trying not to have too many late nights. The odd glass of wine is fine, but early nights and trying to get out during the day which hopefully will keep me going throughout the tour.

Sister Act features a fantastic score by the multi award-winning Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid). How would you describe the soundtrack, and do you have a favourite number to perform and/or watch?

I absolutely adore the soundtrack. It is one of my go-to’s when I am feeling a bit down – you stick it on, and you can’t help smiling and feeling a bit happy. Every number is just a killer and that is the great thing about the show – it builds and builds and builds. If I had to pick one, I’d have to say ‘The Life I Never Led’ which is just the most beautiful song which tells a story and is just wonderful – a wonderful piece.

What do you hope audiences take away from this production?

I don’t need to hope – I just know audiences will take away from this production a brilliant evening. Two hours of complete escapism where they will have fun, they will laugh, they may even cry towards the end and just enjoy themselves. I think it is so needed in the world at this moment – people need an escape and to enjoy themselves so come and see Sister Act on tour.

Is there a piece of advice you’ve received or that you would pass on to anyone hoping to go into the creative industry?

I’ve had lots of pieces of advice over the years, but I think the best piece of advice is that you really need to work hard. It is a tough business out there and you need to love it, truly want to be in it and just work so hard. But also, treat people as you would like to be treated. Everyone within the theatre is doing an amazing job – not just the people on stage but the crew, the wardrobe, everybody – stage management, sound, lighting – it’s a real team so treat everybody as you want to be treated, get on and you will have a fab time!

The Wizard of Oz means everything to me, it’s the ultimate story of overcoming adversity. I first saw the movie aged five and I’ve probably seen it about 100 times since. I played The Tin Man at primary school and got to skate to ‘Over The Rainbow’ on Dancing on Ice so it’s fair to say I’ve had a life-long love affair with the story. Your favourite characters are all there, telling the story you know and love … but with SO much more added to this new production. Prepare to be whisked into an amazing new world of colour.”
