News: Newcastle’s Live Theatre appoints new Artistic Director

Newcastle’s Live Theatre appoints new Artistic Director

Live Theatre, Newcastle, one of the UK’s great new writing theatres, has appointed Joe Douglas as its new Artistic Director. Joe will start at the Newcastle Quayside based theatre in April 2018.

Joe Douglas, New Artistic Director, Live Theatre, Newcastle
Joe is currently a freelance theatre director. After training in Directing at Rose Bruford College, he became a Trainee Director at the National Theatre of Scotland, and has directed plays for National Theatre of Scotland, Dundee Rep, where he was Associate Artistic Director, and productions that have toured extensively across Scotland. He is also Co-Artistic Director of new writing, touring company Utter.

Joe Douglas said: "I have long admired Live Theatre - the reputation is mighty. Artistically and politically, I think we will fit each other well.  New writing is at the heart of my work and I look forward to connecting with audiences and artists in Newcastle and the wider region. I hope to build from the extraordinary legacy of Max Roberts and the exceptional writers that he has championed over so many years. I enjoy making work with and for young people, so the opportunity to help craft the Live Tales programmes is inspiring.  I just want folk to take their eyes off screens, pull a chair up in our theatre and experience a story that will change them a bit. I can't wait to get stuck in at Live Theatre and make the most scintillating new plays we possibly can.”

Joe’s highly acclaimed new production of John McGrath’s The Cheviot, the Stag and the Black, Black Oil, for Dundee Rep also went on a sell out Scottish tour in 2016. His production of Death of a Salesman won three awards at the Critics Awards for Theatre in Scotland 2017. Joe has also won four Fringe First awards for plays he has directed.

Jim Beirne, Chief Executive Live Theatre explains:  “We are absolutely delighted at Joe Douglas’s appointment as Live Theatre’s new Artistic Director.  He currently has a five star reviewed show at the Lyceum in Edinburgh and has been a recipient of multiple awards at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.  He will lead on Live Theatre’s artistic programme from April 2018, with Emeritus Director, and Visiting Professor at Sunderland University, Max Roberts.”

Live Theatre has an international reputation as a theatre for new work and new writing, with many of its plays touring nationally and internationally. In 2017 two of Live Theatre’s plays transferred to London’s West End, The Red Lion written by Patrick Marber and directed by Max Roberts, and Our Ladies of Perpetual Succour, written by Lee Hall, and co-produced with National Theatre of Scotland, which also received an Olivier Award for Best New Comedy. Live Theatre also increased the number of Live Tales creative story writing workshops offered each week for schools, and received an award from Virgin Money Foundation to increase these further in 2018 including at The Fire Station, Sunderland. Live Theatre finished the year with a sell-out run of its acclaimed play The Terminal Velocity of Snowflakes.

Preview: Lee Kyle: Folly on tour

Lee Kyle: Folly

At the 2017 Edinburgh Fringe, Lee Kyle got a really nice review.  The bit that stuck in his mind was that 'It would be good to see him find more of his audience'.

"Yeah" he thought "It bloody would!"

So, in a moment of madness, he has decided to bite off more than he can chew and  has booked a 30+ date national tour, as an attempt to answer the question "What happens if you do a tour while not actually being famous?"
Then, as if that wasn't enough, he is ending the tour with a gig in a 400 seat theatre in his home town.

He'll also be recording a documentary as he goes, while hoping not to regret it.

He's good by the way, should have probably have said that earlier.  He's done a bit of telly and radio but nothing you'll have seen, which is a good thing really or the whole point of the tour won't have made sense.

He had a book out last year, that was in the top ten comedians books on Amazon UK and led to almost no raising of his profile.  His podcast with Sammy Dobson (From BBCs Boy Meets Girl (Yep, she's better known)) is called Which Is The Best? and is funny and is liked by people who like it.
Described by the BBC as a "top up-and-coming comedy performer", Lee Kyle has spent much of his life on a never ending quest to never have a proper job.

He was in an all male Spice Girls tribute act before spending a decade as a professional wrestler where he became the champion of the Northeast of England.  The fact that it was him who decided who won that title does nothing to diminish his achievement.

Managing the difficult trick of being both odd and relatable, his jokes veer between the clever and the silly and deliver more than their fair share of belly laughs.  He is an in demand comedian and compere with a sharp wit and bags of likeability that can thrive in any environment.

His book ‘Spandex Ballet – How I Wasted My Twenties Wrestling’ was the top selling wrestling book on Amazon UK for a time and reached as high as eighth in the comedy book chart.

He has written for Radio 4 and appeared on BBC Radio's Jesting About as well as 4 Extra's ‘Ross Noble’s Newcastle’ and wrote and starred in a sketch for ITV's coverage of the Rugby World Cup and CBBC's Wolfblood premiere.
He has a sideline in comedy for kids, hosting the monthly show at The Stand in Newcastle (Among many others) as well as hosting his touring game show ‘Gunge – A Show With Gunge In It’.  Christmas 2017 has seen him play Muddles in pantomime in the Alun Armstrong theatre in Stanley.  He is the first to admit that it’s odd for someone with an alternative style to have worked with Jedward and Sweep…

He hosts the successful 'Which is the Best?' podcast and has a Youtube video with 3 million views, on which most of the comments are from Americans telling him they can't understand his accent.

He isn’t famous.

TAIKO PERFORMING ARTS ENSEMBLE RETURNS TO THE UK IN 2018

Gateshead Sage

Kodo is one of the best known and most influential taiko performing arts ensemble in the world and returns to the UK in 2018 with the European premiere performances of Evolution.

Under the forward-looking artistic direction of kabuki luminary Tamasaburo Bando, Evolution showcases the creative development of Kodo, its past, its present and its commitment to the future of taiko performing arts.

Evolution is presented under Kodo’s One Earth Tour banner and received its world premiere in Tokyo in 2016. The five UK performances in Brighton, Manchester, Canterbury, Birmingham and Gateshead between 30 January and 7 February mark the production’s very first performances outside of Japan.

Photo: Takashi Okamoto
Based on Sado Island in northern Japan, Kodo debuted at the Berlin Festival in 1981.  Since then the internationally-renowned group of taiko drummers has presented over 5,800 performances in 49 countries on five continents. Kodo strives to preserve and reinterpret traditional Japanese performing arts in productions that encompass energetic and physically-charged ensemble drumming to smaller groups and soloists that feature authentic percussion instruments alongside Western counterparts and song and dance.

In Japanese the word ‘Kodo’ has two meanings: ‘heartbeat’, the primal source of all rhythm - the sound of the great taiko is said to resemble a mother's heartbeat as felt in the womb, and it is no myth that babies are often lulled asleep by its thunderous vibrations; Kodo can also mean ‘children of the drum’ and is a reflection of Kodo's desire to play the drums simply and with the heart of a child.

In an evening that spans over four decades of taiko, Evolution tells the artistic and creative development of Kodo as phrases from signature pieces first heard in 1973 (performed under the name Ondekoza, the group that later became Kodo) to new works created for the premiere in 2016 showcase the ensemble’s meticulously honed skills.

Opening the evening is Kei Kei (2014) as the full cast of 15 performers take to the stage playing okedo-daiko (barrel drums) placed over their shoulders allowing the musicians to move amongst the reverberations. The versatility of this taiko drum is also showcased in Phobos (2009), Mute (2013), and Kusa-wake (2013).

Photo: Takashi Okamoto
After a break from recent One Earth Tour productions, the gigantic o-daiko drum returns to the stage in Evolution. Weighing 300 kg and measuring 140 cm in diameter, the flagship taiko drum is flanked by timpani and bass drums and conjures up deep and powerful rhythms in O-daiko.

Act one ends with Kodo's timeless signature piece, Monochrome (1977) is by legendary composer the late Maki Ishii. Contrasting the simple yet wild nature of taiko performance that is symbolic of Kodo’s direction today, the next generation of musicians use a balance of raw power and skill and play the shime-daiko, a high-pitched roped drum.

Act two opens with Color (2009) which utilizes the shime-daiko but in a completely different way. The performers put down their drumsticks and experiment with different percussive sounds as they tap the drums with their fingernails, rub the drums with their hands and throw clusters of jingling bells onto the skins of the drums.

Tackling the gender disparity often associated with taiko, Ake no Myojo (2012) raises the profile of female drummers as women of the ensemble take to the stage in a taiko, dance and song performance. The melodic bamboo flutes in Yuyami (2013) follows and creates a sense of nostalgia that leads into a newer piece Ayaori (2016).

Rasen draws the evening to a powerful close. Rasen features eight performers - the main soloist playing a hirado (large flat) taiko surrounded by seven performers on nagado (long) taiko, okedo (barrel) taiko and timpani. The octet produces complex and precise rhythms and reveals the remarkable variety of drumming techniques Kodo has perfected during its illustrious history.

Running time: 2 hours (including interval)

News: LID IS LIFTED ON THEATRE ROYAL’S 2018 SEASON

LID IS LIFTED ON THEATRE ROYAL’S 2018 SEASON

HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:
Ballet British Columbia 13-14 March ‘18
Sherlock Holmes 8-12 May ‘18
Dusty the Musical 17-21 July ‘18
Kinky Boots 29 Oct–10 Nov ‘18

Newcastle Theatre Royal’s 2018 Spring/Summer season opens a theatrical treasure chest of riches featuring breath-taking dance, thought-provoking drama, feel-good musicals and family shows aplenty.  So resolve to make 2018 your year of theatre!

The Grade 1 listed Theatre will be bursting at the seams this year as it welcomes no less than five big musicals, including  Evita (22-26 May), Hairspray (25-30 June), Dusty the Musical (17-21 July), Calendar Girls (18-29 Sep) and Kinky Boots (29 Oct – 10 Nov).

Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s hit show Evita returns to Newcastle in May, starring Madalena Alberto (Les Misérables) and Gian Marco Schiaretti (Tarzan). Telling the story of Eva Peron – wife of former Argentine dictator Juan Peron – Evita follows Eva’s journey from humble beginnings through to extraordinary iconic status and features some of the most famous songs in musical theatre.

Returning for one week only after a sell-out visit in Spring 2016, West End and Broadway hit Hairspray lands 25-30 June. Set in 1962, Hairspray tells the story of Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, who’s on a mission to follow her dreams and dance her way onto national TV. This is a feel-good show with the ultimate dance-in-your-seat and singalong soundtrack.

Dusty the Musical (17-21 July) is a landmark new show based on the authorised biography of Dusty Springfield, featuring many of her blazingly soulful pop hits, including I Only Want
to Be with You, Son of a Preacher Man and You Don't Have to Say You Love Me.  With a fiercely funny and emotionally charged script from BAFTA and Olivier nominated writer
Jonathan Harvey, Dusty celebrates the extraordinary and vivacious woman with the iconic voice.

Calendar Girls the Musical (18-29 Sep), by Gary Barlow and Tim Firth, is the award winning musical comedy based on the true story of a group of ordinary ladies who achieved something extraordinary. Straight from the West End, this is a glorious new production with an all-star cast.

But perhaps the most anticipated of the season is Kinky Boots (29 Oct – 10 Nov), winner of every major Best Musical award, including the 2016 Olivier Award for Best New Musical.  Featuring songs by Grammy and Tony winning pop icon Cyndi Lauper and a book by Broadway legend Harvey Fierstein this dazzling show is a joyous story of Brit grit, taking audiences from the factory floor of Northampton to the catwalks of Milan!

Dance fans will delight in three big names this season, starting with the breathtaking Ballet British Columbia (13-14 Mar).  Making its Theatre Royal debut, Canada’s leading national dance company present an exhilarating evening of dance by three internationally celebrated female choreographers. Recognised for their fresh creativity, this 18-strong company of dancers will astound UK audiences with their unique blend of cool, classical elegance, contemporary flair and extraordinary skill.

Returning in May due to phenomenal demand is international Irish dance sensation Spirit of the Dance (16-19) on its record-breaking 20 year anniversary tour. One of the world’s most successful dance shows, Spirit of the Dance showcases the heart-pounding rhythms of Irish dance as well as sensual Flamenco and red hot salsa.  Not one dancer steps out of line as their thunderous feet perform in this thrilling and explosive production.

Another big name to return this season is Stomp (13-18 Aug), the unstoppable smash-hit but fresher, faster and funnier than ever! Combining dance, comedy and music into a theatrical experience like no other Stomp takes familiar objects like newspapers, bins, plastics bags and even the kitchen sink and uses them to create a universal language of rhythm and movement that’s playful, thrilling and exploding with energy.

For drama lovers we are proud to present one riveting new show and one old favourite.   Sherlock Holmes – The Final Curtain (8-12 May) is a gripping new stage show with an all-star cast including Robert Powell and Liza Goddard in celebration of the world’s greatest detective. Holmes lives in retirement on the South Coast and is concerned in his advancing years he may be an easy target for his enemies. So when a new case presents itself Holmes is determined to kill two birds with one stone - solve the mystery and confront his own demons.

Following its sell-out success in January, the multi award-winning West End smash hit comedy drama The Play that Goes Wrong returns 2-7 July.  The Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society are putting on a 1920s murder mystery, but as the title suggests, everything that can go wrong... does! As the accident prone thesps battle on against all the odds to reach their final curtain call, hilarious results ensue!  Now playing on Broadway and enjoying its 4th year in the West End, the show has secured rave reviews and won a host of celebrity endorsements along the way.

Another comedy treat, back once again to warm the hearts of their loyal fans are the incorrigibly Grumpy Old Women (20 May).  Fed up with flogging their guts out and always having to be in charge, the GOW have put their knobbly old feet up in glorious retirement.  Free at last to practise their extreme colouring-in, ukulele orchestra and novelty fudge-making!  But, with the world in a bigger mess than ever before, they will need to unleash their superpowers as only three old Grumpies know how!  Stars Jenny Eclair, Dillie Keane and Lizzie Roper.

Also sure to be a sell-out is the official world premiere of ITV’s smash hit comedy Benidorm (7-15 Sep), which opens at Newcastle Theatre Royal prior to a major national tour.  Produced by iconic Newcastle born West End producer Michael Harrison (The Bodyguard; Young Frankenstein) the show features the much loved TV cast and will bring a heady dose of sangria-soaked Solana sunshine to the stage for the very first time!

Two great new shows for smaller customers complete the new season – a brand new live stage show from the Youtube sensation Little Baby Bum (10-11 July) invites pre-schoolers to step into the magical and colourful world of Nursery Rhymes, while August sees the return of everyone’s favourite piggy in Peppa Pig’s Adventure (22-23 Aug) where we welcome back Peppa and friends as they embark on a camping trip full of games, laughter and live music!

Tickets:

Tickets for all new shows in the Spring / Summer ‘18 season can be purchased online at www.theatreroyal.co.uk or from the Theatre Royal Box Office on 08448 11 21 21 (Calls cost 7p per minute plus your phone company’s access charge).
