In Running Wild (Tue 9 – Sat 13 May ’17), going to Indonesia with her mum isn’t just a holiday for Lilly, it’s a new start and the chance to ride an elephant called Oona.  But then the tsunami hit – and Oona charges into the jungle, with her young rider desperately clinging on.  Directed by Dale Rooks and Timothy Sheader with puppetry design and direction by Finn Caldwell and Toby Olie (War Horse), this epic and spectacular production tells an emotional and moving story of love, loss, loyalty and of living for the moment.
Hot on the heels of The Great British Bake Off, comedy genius Sue Perkins Live! In Spectacles (Sun 12 Feb ’17) will be entertaining audiences with an evening full of sparkling wit, tall tales and a user’s guide to Mary Berry.
And the fun continues with a stellar line up including Shaun Williamson (EastEnders, Extras); Sue Holderness (Only Fools & Horses, Green Green Grass); Andrew Hall (Butterflies, Coronation Street); Susie Amy (Footballers’ Wives) and James Homes (Miranda) guaranteeing that audiences have plenty to laugh about in Ray Cooney’s Olivier Award-winning comedy Out of Order (Mon 22 – Sat 27 May ’17).

E.Nesbit’s classic novel The Railway Children (Mon 26 Jun – Sat 1 Jul ’17) is brought thrillingly to life in a stunning new stage production.  This best-loved tale, made famous by the iconic 1970 movie starring jenny Agutter and Bernard Cribbens, delivers a coming of age story and a fascinating insight into Edwardian rural life.  Following a smash-hit West End season, the tea-guzzling tiger is back in The Tiger Who Came To Tea (Thu 29 Jun – Sat 1 Jul 2017); packed with oodles of magic, sing-a-long songs and clumsy chaos, this delightful family show is sure to put a smile on our young audiences’ faces.

For perfectly feel-good entertainment, look no further than Thoroughly Modern Millie (Mon 10 – Sat 15 Jul ’17) starring Strictly Come Dancing’s Joanne Clifton.  Based on the 1976 Academy Award-winning movie and the winner of six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, this brilliantly funny and entertaining show for all the family will take you back to the height of the Jazz age in New York City when ‘moderns’, including a flapper named Millie Dillmount, were bobbing their hair, raising their hemlines and rewriting the rules of love.

Follow the yellow brick road in a magical journey from Kansas all the way to the Emerald City with Newcastle Upon Tyne Musical Theatre Company (NMTC) in a dazzling and energetic performance of the beloved The Wizard of Oz (Tue 25 – Sat 29 Jul ’17).  And the high energy glamour continues in Crazy for You (Tue 12 – Sat 16 Sep ’17) with Tom Chambers (Top Hat and Strictly Come Dancing) and a wealth of memorable tunes including I Got Rhythm, They Can’t Take That Away From Me and Nice Work If You Can Get It.

Review: Oklahoma! at Newcastle Tyne Theatre

What A Beautiful Musical!

Tyne Theatre Productions present
Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Oklahoma!
Newcastle Tyne Theatre & Opera House
Until Saturday 5th November 2016

Oklahoma! was the first Rogers and Hammerstein musical and it is credited as setting the modern rules for musicals. Indeed the songs are related to the narrative and the 1943 show hasn’t dated. It is the third fundraising production in order to raise funds to help restore the Grade 1 listed Tyne Theatre and, just like the others, it is a fun show to watch.

Set in 1906 it has men who farm or herd cows, chasing women in pretty dresses, and fathers who will organise a shot gun wedding for the slightest approach to their daughter.

The show opens with the fabulous vocal talent of Ollie Cook as Curly singing Oh What A Beautiful Mornin’ whilst Aunt Eller (Bea Atkinson) looks on. The target of his affection Laurey, performed by the charismatic Leigh Geddes joins in with the great singing talent of both Ollie and Bea for The Surrey with the Fringe on Top. The show is off to a great start.

Photo: Stagedoor Photography
We meet Peter Brack as the ladies farm hand Jud Fry and his rich deep voice was perfect for the song Lonely Room just before the interval. There is the travelling salesman Ali (Michael Geddes) who has been involved with Ado Annie (JoJo Hatfield). The trouble is Ado Annie is supposed to be with Will Parker (Steve Halliday) who has just won $50 and her father Andrew (Michael Green) assumes it will be spent on the wedding. Add in the flirtatious Gertie whose irritating laugh has been perfected by Harriet Stout and a box social event that the lads would like a date for and you’ve a recipe for some hi-jinks fun and serious battles.

A feature of Tyne Theatre Productions is the large orchestra, under musical director Jennifer Wagstaff, that takes full advantage of the great acoustics of the opera house.  They added a vitality to the proceedings.

The production team have done a great job. Director Enid Bilton-Gale has kept the pace up on a long story. Celeste Hay and Jayne Orchard have crafted great choreography from the large cast.  Tony Millican’s set design is highly effective and doesn’t hold up the action. The wardrobe department have managed to locate great outfits for the huge cast too.

Talking of the large cast, the show features a large talented chorus that get involved in the action whenever they’re on stage and a large number of gifted dancers too. The dancers have to pull off the slightly weird and dreamy ballet sequence at the end of act 1.

Oklahoma! is another entertaining show that puts some bigger budget shows to shame. Representing great value, it is nice to know that the profits will be reinvested into restoring the historic cultural venue. A great cast, live music and fabulous songs like the title song and What A Beautiful Mornin’ – what is not to like?

Review: How To Make A Killing In Bollywood at Newcastle Northern Stage

Follow North East Theatre Guide on Twitter at https://twitter.com/NETheatreGuide and on Facebook at www.facebook.com/NETheatreGuide.

Northumberland Theatre Company and The Bijli Project presents
How To Make A Killing In Bollywood
Newcastle Northern Stage
Until Friday 4th November 2016

Then Saturday 5th November 2016at Longformacus Village Hall, Borders

Written and devised by Umar Ahmed & Manjot Sumal
Directed by Umar Ahmed
Designed by Michelle Huitson

After success at Edinburgh Fringe and on tour, How To Make A Killing In Bollywood lands in Newcastle and it is easy to see why it has been so popular. Mixing a great comedy script with music and dance it is another example of why we love visiting Northern Stage.

Poor Raza (Umar Ahmed) dreams of success as an actor but his roles have been limited to those requiring Asian Males. He has had bit parts as a taxi driver, corner shop keeper, doctor, terrorist – all of the stereotypes that go with what people assume he can play. He wants a role in which he is simply cast as a male actor, who just happens to be Asian. Between the auditions and roles he works in the kitchen of his mate’s Scottish take away. Whilst Gurjeet (Manjot Sumal) owns the place, it is Chacha (Adam Buksh) whom everyone takes notice of.

Photo: Keith Pattison
Sick of making cheesy chips for drunks at kicking out time and going to bed stinking of onions Raza decides a trip to India in order to launch a film career in Bollywood is the answer to his dreams. Gurjeet agrees to come along for the ride, leaving ChaCha in charge of the business. The tale then follows the journey around Mumbai and the people they meet including Varsha the dancer (Storm-Skyler McClure).

There is great chemistry between Umar and Manjot, as the best friends who go on the trip of a lifetime, which help make the story believable. Added to this is great support in a variety of roles from Adam and Storm-Skyler.

Photo: Keith Pattison
Of course there are a number of issues being dealt with throughout the tale, from the  lack of roles for minority actors and the stereotyping that occurs in such roles, through to the quality of life of Mubai’s inhabitants. None of the issues are given the heavy handed treatment and, whilst there’s plenty to think about afterwards, the show doesn’t forget it is billed as a comedy.

The show gives the audience plenty to laugh with and it isn’t afraid to break the fourth wall and involve the audience occasionally. The action occasionally stops for a quick blast of amazing Bollywood-style dancing as light relief. Choreographer Storm-Skyler McClure has created some really tight routines that add to the flavour of the show.

A great story coupled with characters that we can relate to and an engaging cast are a recipe for a great night at the theatre.

Review: The Glenn Miller Story at Sunderland Empire

Follow North East Theatre Guide on Twitter at https://twitter.com/NETheatreGuide and on Facebook at www.facebook.com/NETheatreGuide.

Tommy Is The Star In Sunderland

The Glenn Miller Story
Sunderland Empire
Until Saturday 5th November 2016

Alton Glenn Miller was just 40 when he went missing in a flight from the UK to Paris as he was heading for a wartime show.  On the 60th anniversary of his first appearance on the stage at the Sunderland Empire, 79 year old Tommy Steele appears as the infamous band leader.

In Bill Kenwright’s show you get the great songs performed live by a very talented 16 piece band under musical director Richard Morris.  Moonlight Seranade, Chattanooga Choo Chooand In The Mood are all there.  An ensemble of 5 great dancers add the moves and the tap dancing. Zoe Nicole Adkin, Siobhan Diffin, Michael Anthony, Jordan Oliver and Alex Tranter are called upon regularly to show their dance moves in Bill Deamer’s choreography.

Photo: Pamela Raith
Understudy Jessica Ellen plays Miller’s fiancé, and later wife, Helen Burger.  Her wonderful voice is used to great effect in Zing! Went The Strings Of My Heart and Moonlight Serenade. Miller’s partner in crime Chummy is played by Ashley Knight who sings a great duet Without You with Tommy Steele.

However, the Glenn Miller Story is a vehicle for Tommy Steele who is on stage pretty much all of the time. His charisma shines through and he is, very much, the star of the show. The audience has to suspend belief when he is trying to date the much younger Miss Burger in the early scenes. Things do improve later on when he plays the role of the older army major.  Perhaps a younger actor could have performed those earlier scenes?

Photo: Pamela Raith
Now we believe nothing kills a show like too much exposition, however, it is possible to have too little narrative. Only brief details are given of Glenn’s rise. From trombone player in Mark Minton’s touring band to an arranger trying to sell his style of music in New York to having his own band – lots happen with limited explanation. The 2 major events: his marriage to Helen and his work on the Glenn Miller sound almost happen unnoticed on stage.

So, yes I’d like to have heard more of the Glenn Miller music/sound. I’d like to hear a bit more detail of the events leading up that fabulous sound and Tommy looks wrong in the early scenes when Miller was in his 20s. But Tommy is a legend, who has real sparkle and charm on stage, the band and dancers are great and Miller’s songs are wonderful.
