Aycliffe Dance Academy has been selected to star alongside Bobby Davro, Dani Harmer and Lee Latchford-Evans from STEPS in this year’s Easter pantomime, Beauty & The Beast at Darlington Civic Theatre in April.

Emma Cox, Principal of the Aycliffe Dance Academy said: “Aycliffe Dance Academy worked with Enchanted Entertainment last year when we provided the Lost Boys and Tinkerbell for their Easter production of Peter Pan. The company were really happy with the high standard and professionalism of our girls that they asked us to provide 6 senior dancers to perform in Beauty and the Beast this year. I was absolutely ecstatic that the dance academy was given this fantastic opportunity.”

“The girls aged between 15 and 20 years old are absolutely over the moon to be taking part in this fantastic production, dancing alongside such well known and loved celebrities. Having the opportunity to perform in one of the North East’s biggest theatres is also super exciting for them. They can't wait to get to the theatre to meet all of the cast and have the best experience of their lives.”

“The girls have been working extremely hard in preparation for the big performance. It's going to be an amazing production for all the family, one that's not to be missed.”

Enchanted Entertainment have assembled a fantastic cast and are planning some true pantomime magic to ensure ‘Beauty and the Beast’ will be a spectacular family show with wonderful sets, brilliant costumes, high-octane dance routines and plenty of popular songs to please all ages.

A concert to celebrate 100 years of the legend Frank Sinatra swings into Darlington Civic Theatre on 28 March

A spectacular live concert featuring Stephen Triffitt as Frank, and his friends Sammy Davies and Dean Martin who are played by George Daniel Long and Mark Adams. All three are undoubtedly some of the world’s finest interpreters of the legendary king of swing.

The three artists are best known for performing these roles in The Rat Pack in London’s West End for nearly 10 years. They have been seen live by more than 1 million people worldwide. To call them a tribute act or impersonators would truly undervalue the years of experience and dedication they have put into their portrayals.

Odyssey
Arts Centre Washington
Thursday 26 March

An award winning adaption of Homer’s masterpieceThe Odyssey’ comes to Arts Centre Washington on Thursday 26 March.  But Theatre Ad Infinitum’s production ‘Odyssey’ is an epic story with a difference… this is a one man show!

One Actor. One hour. One man’s epic quest to reunite with his family and seek his bloody revenge. Lecoq-trained company Ad Infinitum, ‘Best of the Fringe’ (Observer) reinvent the timeless Greek myth. Passionate, highly physical, and poignant storytelling brings this breath taking adventure to life. A journey that will ignite the imagination and awaken the senses…

The show is performed by George Mann and directed by Nir Paldi.

Director Nir Paldi said: “We wanted to create a dramatic and poetic piece that really works the imagination of the audience: being a one man show this was a big challenge. The magic, characters, spaces, colours, and whole islands are all created by George and I had to push hard to find the precise world of Homer’s Odyssey.”

Odyssey follows the Greek warrior Odysseus in his relentless attempt to get home so he can see his wife and son again before he dies. Up against the God Poseidon and his hurricanes; nymphs that sexually enslave him; countless characters, creatures and ferocious one-eyed monsters; whatever hardship he endures, Odysseus’ tough heart won’t give in. But after twenty year’s away from home will everything be as he left it…?

Odyssey premiered in the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and was an official Fringe Sell-Out Show receiving critical acclaim and going on to win The Stage ‘Best Solo Performer Award’. It has since toured internationally to sell out audiences in Norway, Italy, Romania, Croatia and Canada but this is the first time that it has been performed here in the North East.

Theatre Ad Infinitum is a multi-award-winning international theatre ensemble based in London who create performances that challenge and inspire by harnessing the universal language of the body.

Review: What The Body Does Not Remember at Northern Stage

The Show That Stomps

What The Body Does Not Remember
With Timeless Youth Dance
NewcastleNorthern Stage
Until 18th March 2015.

Timeless Youth Dance in rehearsal
The evening began with a free evening outdoor performance with the Northumberland based Timeless Youth Dance Group, who are aged 13-16, and have been working with choreographer Nadia Iftkhar and musician Mariam Rezaei to create an intricate new ten minute piece which has been inspired by What The Body Does Not Remember. The eleven dancers threw themselves into their performance and fully deserved the warm applause that they received.

Wim Vandekeybus originally brought What The Body Does Not Remember to the world in 1987. He had created a brutal, physical show which could list Iggy Pop amongst its fans. His Ultima Vez company now revisits the piece with a new cast 28 years later and it has lost none of the original power. This is not a pretty show but it is very thrilling. The accompanying music by Thierry De May and Peter Vermeersch pulsates as the journey proceeds.

The company of dancers took full advantage of the venue’s wide stage. At the start it seemed to be a case of the trouble of getting to sleep. The tempo soon escalates with bricks flying across the stage in a potentially dangerous game of catch. This was not the only point that the dancers had to really trust one another as they needed to be pushed out of the way just in time before the object lands. The cast start stealing each others jackets and towels in an anarchic game of tag. The dystopian nightmare was inter-dispersed with lighter moments which made the audience chuckle.

After an examination of the uncomfortable side of relationships that seemed to border on bullying, the talented and hardworking cast had a go at throwing clothing catalogue style poses to comic effect. The melodrama had quite a lot of stomping action which needed pin point timing to ensure no accidents.

An exhilarating exploration of physical theatre. What The Body Does Not Remember is another triumph for the Dance Touring Partnership who have brought the show across for the UK tour.
