The Giant’s Loo Roll
Whitley Bay Playhouse
Saturday 4th June 2016

‘Oh Fe Fi Fo
And Fe Fi Fum!
Now what shall I do to wipe my …..’

‘Bumpety! Bumpety! Bumpety- Bump! A Giant’s toilet roll one day fell to the floor and flew away.’

Look out for the biggest loo roll ever on stage in this GIANT of a children’s musical. The villagers living in the town below the Giant’s house had better watch out, that loo roll has gone bouncing down the hill and straight towards them! Luckily, the townsfolk find lots of uses for runaway loo paper – one sheet provides a huge canvas for an artist, a tailor uses another to fill her shop with paper pants and a school class makes a huge dart that can fly. But what about the Giant himself – doesn’t he need any loo paper? The townspeople have an answer for that, too!

Watch out for some frightened sheep, lots of excited children and a fantastic amount of toilet paper in this rip roaring new musical by TaleGate Theatre Productions.

This musical has been put together by the team that brought you the festive musical ‘Father Christmas Needs a Wee!’ which has seen success in a sell-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and a sell-out UK Tour. With ‘The Giant’s Loo Roll’, TaleGate Theatre Productions have yet again hit the perfect combination of witty humour, fantastic music and the extra sparkle for which they have become known in this fabulously funny and brilliantly bouncy musical adaptation of Nicholas Allan’s much loved book.

FAYE STEPS INTO PANTO

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Whitley BayPlayhouse
Until Saturday 3rd January 2016

We have been lucky in seeing a number of great pantomimes this year. This is no exception and as a member of the audience said “this is better than the last one we saw.” The bar has been raised in the region.

So what makes a great panto? One simple element is realising that the audience are as much a part of the show as the cast and crew. No amount of special effects escapes the fact that panto is something you are a part of rather than something that is done to you. In Steve Walls we have a master of ceremonies that fully appreciates how to work the audience. As Muddles he encourages the Whitley Bay crowd to take part and get involved. From the cute children singing Old Macdonalds Farm to the greetings when he walks onto the stage.

Rebecca Shorrocks
Adding to the children’s entertainment is a very talented Rebecca Shorrocks as the daft and friendly Odd Job. In not always reading the situation right, Rebecca frequently gave everyone someone to laugh with.   The Whitley Bay crowd seemed to have a significant younger element of children in compared to other panto’s and it is important that they had jokes they could enjoy.

Rob McVeigh
On to the story… Snow White (Charlotte Chinn) is the fairest of them all in Ooo La La Ville and becomes the love interest of Prince Charming (Rob McVeigh) when he visits looking for a bride. The Wicked Queen (Faye Tozer) is less than impressed and so she demands Snow White is killed in the forest. Rather than kill his friend, Odd Job leaves her in the forest where she decides to have a kip in a house with 7 very small beds…

Faye Tozer
Former Steps star Faye Tozer proves herself to be a decent actor as well as a great singer. She makes a grand entrance with a Queen medley and finishes the show with a crowd pleasing Steps medley. She enjoyed herself as the baddie and courted the boos of the audience. It is surprising that she wasn’t given more opportunities to sing than she was.

The set and costumes are very bright and the special effect with the mirror very effective.  The dancers, including the youngsters from the Hazel Rayson Dance School, didn’t put a foot wrong and felt a part of the story rather than a bolt-on.

Steve Walls
The only quibble really was the decision to put fixed static heads on the dwarves. This meant they had to exaggerate hand gestures to show who was meant to be talking.  The backing tape used impressions tv personalities such as Simon Cowell, Bruce Forsyth and Keith Lemon for each of the dwarves.  This represents, in our opinion, a missed opportunity for the actors from the Tyne Theatre School to really show off their skills.

Snow White is a warm and friendly show that both the young and older members of the audience enjoyed.

Swan Lake – A Synopsis: Prince Siegfried is celebrating his coming of age in the garden of his ancestral palace. His mother observes that it's time to consider marriage and that tomorrow at the formal celebration of his 21st birthday, the court ball, he should select his future wife from the lovely ladies in attendance.

But, tomorrow is another day and for today Siegfried prefers to go hunting. Alone, by a lake, he sees Odette, Queen of the Swans, who appears to be both swan and woman. She explains that an evil sorcerer, Von Rothbart, has cast a spell on her and she must remain a swan, except between midnight and dawn, unless she is saved by true love.

Siegfried, in love at first sight, swears his undying love,
promises to marry her and never to love another, but the wicked magician who disguises his own daughter, Odile, as the Swan-maiden, tricks him. Siegfried asks for her hand in marriage and swears an oath of fidelity to Odile. Suddenly Von Rothbart and Odile stand before him in a triumph of self-revelation as the pathetic figure of Odette, sobbing helplessly is seen at a distance. Siegfried collapses in an agony of guilt and despair.

Heartbroken, he returns to thelakeside to beg Odette's forgiveness and declares his infinite love for her. Against all odds, the power of true love eventually overcomes the evil spell. The swan-maidens are restored to human form and Odette and Siegfried are reunited in eternal happiness.
