Review: Broke at Washington Arts Centre

The Tale Of Other People’s Money

Broke
Washington Arts Centre
12th March 2015.

The Paper Birds return to the region with another heartfelt performance which resonated with its audience. After last year’s Thirsty, which Jowheretogo rated as The Small Scale Production of 2014(link to awards article) -  review: link to Jowheretogo review, it is great to another vibrant show.

It is clear that they have done their research and looked into the effects of debt with a range of people of differing backgrounds. A number of these tales are woven into the start of the show, which features a mixture of clever animations and lighting effects. As the taped recordings are fast forwarded the cast try to emulate the effect. Fairly quickly the drama centres mainly around a mother called Sally and her money problems.

Sally has a son and she is struggling to find the money for food and heating. She would like to be able to buy her young son an ice cream when he asks for one. We don’t get her full life story nor is a solution suggested and this adds to the power of the performance as it is left to one’s own mind to make those links. Her situation is given in stark contrast to the tale of how the Paper Birds actress Kylie built up her own debt starting with her time at university.

The individual stories, such as selling goods to pay off lenders, are in contrast to the overall story of the national debt and how the countries economy relies on individual debt. The facts are kept brief and hence interest is maintained.

Lighting, sound and animation design add to, rather than detract from, the feeling of the show. Two boxes, in which Jemma McDonnell and Kylie Walsh deliver many of the stories are a clever device. Shane Durrant     has a greater role than adding music but it is perhaps adding suspense to the Deal or No Deal section that saw him in his greatest element.

The show has real impact because it is discussing real people and the current state of the nation rather than some fictional hypothesis. It is easy to see how one’s personal debt profile evolves from small lender to a much larger problem. The show does not go into the morality of either the “buy the latest model now, pay for it later” mentality or low wages resulting in our working poor.

A moving factual production which leaves the audience with plenty to think about.

Where Has The Wealth Gone?

Broke
Newcastle Live Theatre Tuesday 10–Wednesday 11 February
Arts Centre Washington Thursday 12 March

Broke is a new play by The Paper Birds coming to the region visiting Live Theatre on the 10thand 11th February and Arts Centre Washington on Thursday 12 March as part of a national tour.

What does it mean to be broke in 2014, as a person and as a country? Based on personal testimonies from nationwide interviews The Paper Birds return to their celebrated verbatim form of theatre to consider pennilessness in an age of personal (and national) debt

There are 13 million people in poverty in the UK and over half of these people are from working families. At Christmas 2013 the Red Cross started asking for food donations for the first time since World War II. What happens when you have to resort to sex work to pay the bills, or try to give up dealing drugs only to end up at a food bank when the money dries up, too? What happens when you have to sell everything you own to buy enough petrol for a journey across the country to visit your parents, or when at 28 you can’t buy anything more than cheap white bread to eat in the supermarket?

From the team behind last year’s celebrated Thirsty, this UK tour of Broke follows its sell-out success at the Edinburgh Fringe 2014. Sharing real life stories from the front line of poverty and debt in the UK, this new piece of verbatim theatre is a heartfelt and urgent look at the debt of a nation from displaced families and gambling addictions to beans on toast and blind leaps of faith onto the property ladder. Based on interviews taken across the UK in 2014, multi award winners The Paper Birds explore what it means to be broke, from ‘feeling the pinch’ to finding yourself penniless, in this visually stunning new production.

The Paper Birds Artistic Director Jemma McDonnell said:  “Broke is the first show we are making in a trilogy about class.  Armed with the statistic that the richest 1% of British people have as much as the bottom 55%, we started as we often do; by going out and speaking to people in food banks, in hostels, in charity and betting shops. As the 2015 Election approaches we are reminded that politics should not belong to the experts, it belongs to us all. Broke opens up a dialogue about austerity, inequality, about poverty and debt and shares some of the real stories and voices behind these shocking statistics.”

Company co-founder, devisor and performer Kylie Walsh said: “When making a new piece of political work, it’s always about what matters to me. I asked that question of myself, ‘what’s relevant to me, my life, my situation’? The answer was a four letter word: debt. I’m in debt. I owe thousands of pounds to credit card companies: and I’m not the only one. There are millions of us racking up huge bills that we can’t afford to pay back, that we can barely afford the interest on. And if I find myself in this situation, in full time work, what other stories can we unearth from across our culture? And crucially, how does the larger deficit, our nation’s debt crisis, filter down to me?”

The Paper Birds strive to create devised work that is culturally, socially and politically observational and conversationally urgent. Their productions emerge from a female perspective, and aim to address and evoke discussion, thought, and emotion when and where it is most needed, whilst retaining the company's signature visual and physical approach. Their past work includes In A Thousand Pieces (Fringe First and Fringe Review award winner, 2008), the highly celebrated sell-out Thirsty (2011) and 2013’s On the One Hand, with Northern Stage at St. Stephen’s. The company has also been shortlisted for Amnesty International Freedom of Expression award, The Stage’s Best Ensemble and Total Theatre’s Best Young Company.

The Jowheretogo Theatre Year 2014

The Jowheretogo Theatre Year

So what were the productions that made the Jowheretogo team smile, laugh and/or cry the most this year? Stephen Oliver looks back at an exciting 2014.

Funny play of the year: The Play That Goes Wrong which we saw at the Darlington Civic Theatre. This play had us laughing from start to finish – memories of watching Airplane! the movie at the cinema when we were very young. The show is still on in the London West End and a sequel Peter Pan Goes Wrong reaches Darlington Civic and Newcastle Theatre Royal in 2015. http://nomorepanicbutton.blogspot.co.uk/2014/06/review-play-that-goes-wrong-at.html

Musical of the year: Urinetown which we saw at the St James Theatre in London and became the play we love to quote thereafter. Great memorable songs, coupled with a cracking storyline – a feature that was missing on a number of musicals this year. We would love to see it tour to the North East. http://nomorepanicbutton.blogspot.co.uk/2014/04/review-urinetown-musical-at-st-james.html

Moving Play of the Year: the revival of Wet House at Live Theatre was superb. Joe Caffrey was in great form as one of the trouble souls in Paddy Campbell’s debut play. http://nomorepanicbutton.blogspot.co.uk/2014/09/review-wet-house-at-newcastle-live.html

Small scale show of the year: Thirsty from The Paper Birds which we saw at The Arts Centre Washington was a rollercoaster of emotions as Jemma McDonnell and Kylie Walsh consumed large amounts of liquid whilst exploring friendship and the demon alcohol.

Whodunnit of the year was Jason Durr’s portrayal of Agatha Christie’s Poirot in Black Coffee which had us guessing to the end at Newcastle’s Theatre Royal. We saw a number of murders of stage this year but this show was a cut above the rest. http://nomorepanicbutton.blogspot.co.uk/2014/07/review-black-coffee-at-newcastle.html

Amateurs showing the professionals how it is done play of the year has to be the moving Duet For One at the People’s Theatre in Newcastle. A fabulous look into some really difficult questions.  http://nomorepanicbutton.blogspot.co.uk/2014/05/review-duet-for-one-newcastle-peoples.html

Kids show of the year is one we hand over to the wee-man of the team.  Robert loved Get Santa! at Newcastle’s Northern Stage. A funny show that wasn’t afraid to connect with the young audience. It was funny and heart warming without any unnecessary innuendo.  http://nomorepanicbutton.blogspot.co.uk/2014/12/review-get-santa-at-newcastle-northern.html

Dance show of the year was the incredible The Five & The Prophecy of Prana from Boy Blue Entertainment. The mix of manga style characters and strong storyline had the Northern Stage audience captivated. http://nomorepanicbutton.blogspot.co.uk/2014/10/review-five-prophecy-of-prana-at.html

Wedding of the year? Well we see a lot of coupling on stage and the great farce that was Perfect Wedding at South Shields Customs House was very funny and showed that the North East produces entertaining theatre. http://nomorepanicbutton.blogspot.co.uk/2014/09/review-perfect-wedding-at-south-shields.html

A massive thank you goes to the actors, producers, directors and theatres that have invited us along to the shows this year. Theatre remains a great night out and is not just about the Panto at Christmas. We have never seen a broadcast of a West End Show at a cinema because we now there is plenty of live entertainment out there in our wonderful theatres.

Looking ahead – 2015 is going to be another cracking year too!
