Former Secret Service agent turned bodyguard, Frank Farmer, is hired to protect superstar Rachel Marron from an unknown stalker. “This is your parcel. It’s not your parcel – that would have been too bloody sweet – it’s someone else’s parcel, but it will represent your parcel in this demonstration. This shit coloured coffee stain on the floor is Surrey and you are… you are… the knob off the deep fat fryer”

These days, sometimes, one job just isn’t enough.

Neve has three.

When she’s not managing the world’s worst delivery company, she’s making cold calls. And that doesn’t leave much time for her job as a children’s entertainer.

And just when things can’t get any worse, her boss turns up with even more bad news. But all is not lost; she sees her opportunity and takes it.

An evening of laughs, happy coincidences and sticking it to the man, all at the coast’s most exciting theatre venue.

“"The coast is a vibrant and flourishing community that hasn't even begun to fulfil its creative potential. Laurels is at the very heart of this, presenting new work to new audiences in a new way."

"Juggling is about the 5.2 million people in the UK who have had to take on second jobs. It is estimated that a further 4.6 million will have to do the same if the cost of living continues to rise. (That's 30% of the working population). While we don't expect all 9.8 million to come to the show, the challenges of juggling different roles will resonate with those that do."

Producers Fuel, Northern Stage, Imaginate and National Theatre of Scotland today announce the cast for this timely and important new production from award winning Scottish writer Hannah Lavery (Lament for Sheku Bayoh, The Drift, Eavesdropping).

Tamara Fairbairn will play Jade while Esmé Kingdom makes her professional debut as Chloe and Kirsty MacLaren, whose credits include the Olivier Award winning Our Ladies of Perpetual Succour and The Crown (Netflix), will take up the role of Alice.

Directed by Northern Stage’s Artistic Director and Joint Chief Executive Natalie Ibu (Road, The White Card), the play, a celebration of youth activism, will tour to Northern Stage, Newcastle, the Edinburgh International Children’s Festival and across Scotland in spring 2023.

Protest follows Alice, Jade and Chloe. Running is Alice’s happy place - she’s the best runner at her school but is struggling to prove her worth. Jade is slowly coming to realise that prejudices can be found everywhere, even in the most surprising places. Realising that her education is ill-equipped to encompass her own history and heritage, and taunted by bullies at school, she knows it’s time to tell her own story. Meanwhile, litter is piling up in the local forest, and all over the world an environmental crisis is looming. Chloe is determined to make a change, starting with the town. The three girls prepare to stand up for what they believe in despite the injustices stacked against them.

Writer Hannah Lavery explains: "It felt important to write a play for young people which offered hope. We are living in such tumultuous times that can leave us all and especially young people with a sense that we have no agency to inspire and create change. So, I wanted to celebrate those young people who within their local communities, within their schools, families and friendship groups are working to make their world a better and fairer place for us all.”

Natalie Ibu, Artistic Director and Joint Chief Executive, Northern Stage and also the Director of Protest, added: "I’m thrilled to be directing Protest and proud that Northern Stage are co-producers on this fantastic new play. We hope it inspires more young people to find their voice. A celebration of youth activism and uniting to take a stand against racism, the patriarchy and the climate crisis, Hannah Lavery's brilliant new play couldn't be more fitting for our This is Family season - a year long programme exploring how we connect and organise ourselves; for support, for good times, for better or worse."

Kate McGrath, Director, Fuel, said: “Hannah Lavery has written a beautiful play, a celebration of the power of young girls to stand up for what they believe in, like generations of girls before them and yet to come. Fuel is proud to have co-commissioned Hannah, and excited to be embarking on a new collaboration with director Natalie Ibu. This project is part of a longstanding commitment to producing the work of brilliant womxn theatre-makers on projects exploring the big questions of our times.”

Noel Jordan, Director, Edinburgh International Children’s Festival, said: “Imaginate is thrilled to have supported Hannah as an Accelerator programme artist, providing her time and space for the first draft of the ‘Protest’ script to emerge. The commission as a full Festival production, alongside incredible partners, feels timely with its focus on gender and racial inequality and the importance of young female voices.”

Jackie Wylie, Artistic Director of National Theatre of Scotland, said: National Theatre of Scotland fully supports all young people in having a say in the future of our world.  Hannah’s beautifully crafted play, exploring this territory, is fuelled with hope and passion.

“We are so proud to be supporting the touring of this production, working with valued partners, Fuel, Imaginate and Northern Stage to ensure that audiences across Scotland will have the chance to experience this vital and timely production about the power of protest.”

Co-commissioned by Fuel, Imaginate and Northern Stage. Developed and supported by the Scottish Government’s Festivals Expo Fund and Imaginate’s Accelerator programme. Accelerator is supported by the PLACE programme, funded by the Scottish Government (through Creative Scotland), the City of Edinburgh Council and the Edinburgh Festivals. Supported by the Binks Trust.

Television Dancing Sensation To Light Up Newcastle Theatre Royal

Johannes Radebe: Freedom Unleashed

Newcastle Theatre Royal

Sunday 30 April 2023

Strictly Come Dancing fan favourite and TV dancing sensation Johannes Radebe is to make a popular return to Newcastle Theatre Royal with brand-new production Freedom Unleashed.

After the phenomenal success of his debut sell-out UK tour, Johannes and a diverse, world-class cast of talented dancers and singers will be performing to a mix of African rhythms and huge party anthems with a touch of ballroom magic – making the show a jubilant celebration of culture, passion, and freedom.

Johannes will be joined by Oliver Adam-Reynolds (Dirty Dancing West End), Lila Eccles (Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cinderella), Lowri Evans (Johannes Radebe: Freedom), Demmileigh Foster (9 to 5), Jared Irving (Matthew Bourne’s Lord of The Flies), Luke Jarvis (Chicago), Shayna McPherson (Disney’s Aladdin), Duane-Lamonte O Garro (The Lion King), Joshian Angelo Omana, Barnaby Quarendon (Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake) and Zinzile Tshuma (Thriller Live!)

Completing the company will be South African singer-songwriter and former contestant of The Voice South Africa, Ramelo.

Born in the township Zamdela Sasolburg, South Africa, Johannes Radebe started dancing when he was seven.  He was fascinated by the discipline and glamour of Ballroom and Latin.  Over the next 13 years, Johannes competed in local competitions, climbing up the Latin ranks with top honours, and eventually adding Ballroom and other dance styles, such as African Contemporary and Jazz. He became a finalist at national dance competitions and received an invitation to compete internationally in St Petersburg, Russia.

At the age of 21, Johannes left South Africa to work on the internationally renowned Italian cruise liner Costa. Persistence and experience saw this young, vibrant South African given more responsibilities including choreographing, teaching new dancers, and then eventually being promoted to Dance Captain. In 2018, he was invited to join the debut season of the international hit show, Dancing With The Stars, in South Africa.

Johannes toured the world in the international dance show Burn The Floor before being headhunted by Strictly Come Dancing, later moving to the UK to dance on the flagship BBC show.  In his second series, he was partnered with Catherine Tyldesley and danced the first same-sex routine with fellow Strictly star Graziano Di Prima. He was partnered with Caroline Quentin in his third year and the couple made it to week seven.

In 2021, he and his celebrity partner, John Waite, made history by being the first all-male partnership to compete on the show. The pair made it to the final and won the British LGBT Award for Media Moment of the Year. Johannes also recently won Attitude's Game Changer Award. In 2022, he was partnered with comedian and actress Ellie Taylor.

Preview: Matthew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty at Newcastle Theatre Royal

Matthew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty comes to Newcastle Theatre Royal

Matthew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty

Newcastle Theatre Royal

Tuesday 18 – Saturday 29 April 2023

Audience favourite New Adventures make a triumphant return to Newcastle Theatre Royal with the gothic romance Matthew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty which takes to the stage for a stunning two week run.

The stellar cast includes several original cast members as well as a young generation of performers new to this beloved production which in 2022 celebrated 10 years since its premiere at Sadler’s Wells, when it became the fastest-selling production in the company’s history.

We caught up with Matthew Bourne on how it felt to be bringing back his production of ‘Sleeping Beauty for its 10th anniversary…

“Sleeping Beauty is interesting because I felt I had to find an original way of approaching this piece. I love the music, but it did feel very grand and very famous and very difficult to approach in many ways.

“So, I read everything around Sleeping Beauty, the fairy tale versions, there a several, and various books about fairy tales that give insight into the story. I watched lots of version of the ballet. The thing that’s interesting about the story is that it covers a long period of time with the 100-year sleep of Aurora. But it was really the time-period that influenced me the most. The ballet was created in 1890 and I said, ‘Why don’t we set the piece to begin in 1890?’ Then we go forwards in time to Auroras 21st birthday which is 1911 and with the 100-year curse we are brought right up to the present day. Unfortunately, that was 10 years ago! So now we’re sort of 110 years later, but we get around it somehow by being a little vague about the time period when she wakes up!

“What’s great about recreating a classical ballet, is you’ve got this incredible score that was all written to dance to. The music becomes your script and tells you what the feeling and the emotion of each scene should be. Because Tchaikovsky and Petipa, who was the original choreographer, told their story through dance, its easy then to find a slightly different story through dance but using the emotions written into the music to guide you.

“We use the same piece of music at the beginning of Act 1 and Act 2 to represent the baby Aurora and then the grown-up Aurora. The baby is very naughty, a real hand full, and so is more grown-up Aurora in a way, she’s a real wild child. By using the same piece of music, I thought that would tie them together. It’s different than in the ballet, but it sounds absolutely right.

“Lez Brotherston, who is the designer I’ve worked with on most of the shows that we do, does similarly detailed research to me. He likes the sense of history in pieces, so this piece really appealed to him, resulting in an enormous number of costumes and wigs! Because it’s not only the reality of those time periods, but also fantasy with fairies and wings and characters that are flights of fancy. Lez came up with amazing costumes for the fairies, all designed around different bird feathers. It gives Lez a chance to really be inventive and creative with those costumes and they’re not referencing anything historical. Something I’ve also noticed with Lez’s design, is that he loves to be true to history. It’s a wonderful thing because it makes you understand why people held themselves in a certain way because of a corset or whatever it might be, and how that affects movement.

“When we originally developed the piece ten years ago, we decided to set up the love story of Aurora and Leo. Leo is an invented character of ours and is her first love. He works in the gardens of the royal estate. When Aurora is cursed by Carabosse to sleep for 100 years, I realised that the question is, how can they be together in 100 years’ time? By turning the Lilac fairy, who is called Count Lilac in our version, into a vampire, he is able to give Leo the gift of eternal life. For me that was a very romantic idea and perfect for this story because it allows Leo to be there when she wakes up. Of course, there are consequences as he now is a vampire himself, but we sort of play with the idea that you can have a good vampire and bad vampire and this story is very much about good versus evil. Good and evil, it plays with it all the time, that’s what Sleeping Beauty is about.

“One of the interesting ideas that Lez and I came up with early on for the piece was I always felt when I saw the classical ballet, there is always sort of a baby in the cot and she is the main character in the piece, you know, she is the leading character in this story Aurora, so I thought it would be great if we could give her a personality. So, the idea of puppets came up - could we represent Aurora with a puppet? I love to inject a bit of humour into the early part of the show so people relax, who may be coming to dance for the first time or thinking they’re not to get the story and if they laugh, they’re happy. In order to achieve the effect several dancers are covered in black body suits, manipulating puppet Aurora, bringing her to life, and through the lighting you can’t even see they’re there. It’s incredible really.

“It’s wonderful to see the different generations of dancers pass on their knowledge of the show and that’s why I also like a mix in a cast of people who’ve done a show before and new people who bring a fresh light to it. Unlike other companies we get our dancers to work together on a role. They will share their experience of it and the new person will bring some new ideas that will go into the role as well, so it becomes very rich because of the input of lots and lots of people.

“The story is about the power of love, it’s about love across time that’s indestructible. That’s why I call it a gothic romance because the overriding emotion is love, and how two people be together despite everything.”

Now established as a firm favourite in the New Adventures repertoire, the award-winning Sleeping Beauty has enchanted audiences throughout the UK and across the globe.

With an unforgettable score by Tchaikovsky, sumptuous sets and costumes, evocative lighting and masterly storytelling, the beloved fairy tale is brought to life by the uniquely talented New Adventures company. Get ready to be transported in time from the halcyon days of the late Edwardian era through to the modern day in this dazzling gothic romance.

Sleeping Beauty is directed and choreographed by Matthew Bourne working with his regular collaborators and New Adventures Associate Artists, Lez Brotherston (Set and Costumes), Paule Constable (Lighting) and Paul Groothuis (Sound Design).

Preview: Worlds Apart at Newcastle Northern Stage

New play takes a truthful and optimistic look at what it means to be a carer or cared for in the North East

Worlds Apart
Newcastle Northern Stage
Thursday 20 to Saturday 22 April 2023
Directed by Poppy Crawshaw
Developed by Woven Nest Theatre

Magical. The movement between worlds was just so beautiful. The subtlety of the issues and the nuance was just incredible.”
(Audience member, Worlds Apart)

Woven Nest Theatre will be bringing their new show, Worlds Apart, a lively celebration of ageing and human resilience to Northern Stage from Thursday 20 to Saturday 22 April 2023. Inspired by the unpaid carers the company has met from across the North East over the last three years, along with a desire to tell an authentic story about what it’s like to be a carer and be cared for, Worlds Apart tells the story of three generations of women who are thrown together in a household after years of living apart. Told through the eyes of a young gamer, audiences are invited to take a truthful and optimistic look at unpaid care and family relationships in all their messy, marvellous glory.

Poppy Crawshaw co-founder of Woven Nest Theatre and director of Worlds Apart said: “As an aging population, many of us will either care for a family member or be cared for at some stage in our lives. In 2022 we brought together young carers, unpaid carers and older people living in residential care to take part in a range of group storytelling, writing, drama, and music workshops, to collaborate on the development of this important show. The result is a funny, raw, and truthful look at the world of care that we hope will resonate with audiences.”
Featuring Jacqueline Phillips as Penny, Rosie Stancliffe as Helen, and Ayla Brown as Egg, Worlds Apart welcomes audiences into the heart of one family as they grapple with what caring looks and feels like. Post-performance will feature a musical response with original songs by Zoe Takiwatanga, an emerging writer who worked with musician Nicky Rushton to put her words to music. This show is a vibrant and engaging experience presented by one of the North East’s most exciting theatre companies. Woven Nest Theatre is passionate about bringing relevant work to audiences and welcoming people who do not usually visit theatre or the arts in general to see their work.
